Temping :)

Well, as I've handed in my notice, I'm going on holiday for a couple of weeks, but when I get back (mid august) I've got 5/6 weeks before Uni starts. I thought I could do some temping, or maybe even do some self employed stuff for a little bit. Probably won't take off, but you know. Just to get a bit of cash before university :). So, my question is, anyone to point me in the right direction? Or just say all the students have got the jobs already so theres no point and I may as well have the summer off?

Or be annoying like my mum and say 'why are you quitting your job??'. :grump:

well it was perhaps a bit daft to quit your job - might've been easier to stick at it for a few weeks. however you obviously have your own reasons for that.

last summer it wasn't looking like i'd be getting any extra work where i work part time so i registered at some temping agencies (look in your phone book). well when i say registered i mean i filled some forms in but didn't have all of the necessary forms and was meant to go back but i didn't as some work came in where i normally work.

i'd suggest that you ring the places up before hand and ask what you need to bring in in order to be able to register then it'll save you having to go back.

i also know from other people that you need to keep at them sometimes to get you some work.

also don't be too picky, tell them you'll do anything (if the money's right).

I usually temp in my uni holidays. You need to go in and register with your passport and bank details. However, in the holidays, they have soooo many students that you can't really be guaranteed much work. For example, in the past 2 weeks, I've been given 3 days work. But other times they've given me a solid office job for 2 or 3 weeks. It's really unpredictable.

As lucifer says, be prepareed to do anything. I usually do admin, but I don't mind doing the odd bar or retail job. Factory/warehouse jobs are ok too but I tend to stay away from the cleaning ones..which they do offer you, you'd be surprised!
Obviously agencies are different, I don't know what you have in your area... some just specialise in office or industrial work, others are more general such as Brooke Street which is all over the country.

Also just to warn you loads of them agencies probably wont' be taking on extra staff at this time of the year - my university used to break up late - june kind of time and I could never get registered with an agency becuase they were already full up with students who had registered in May - sob sob.

Well I don't mind doing something else, just a little bit of cash would be fine. I mean, I'd happily go round the local villages on my motorbike watering people's plants and cutting their lawns. Think someones already going around doing that though and he has a petrol lawnmower on his van :(.

    Washing cars, maybe? :chin:

Anything for a bit of extra pocket money really.

 Seems like a good idea to me. Or you could ask around if people would like odd jobs done, like walking the dog.

House removals are good - bloody hard work, but it keeps you fit and because it's hard graft people tend to drop out quite quickly. :)

I wouldn't reckon washing cars will get you much money. You can drive through a carwash for about £3.

My office has lots of temps working. All you need to do is sign up with a temping agency, most of them have website where you can see the vancancies and you can get anything from day to temporary ongoing. You are not commited to take them. Places like call centres and offices use temps a lot.
