wireless networks: intermittent signal strength

why does my signal strength fluctuate randomly between very good to nothing at all.
there are no electrical devices in the way or phones being used. the router is in the same place, the laptop has stayed in the same place during this whole conversation and playing my mp3s over the network is nearly impossible due to signal being really intermittent.
shall i change the wireless channel?
