Work disciplinary

JsTJsT Posts: 18,268 Skive's The Limit
Essentially my work have decided to clamp down on 'non related emails' going round the workplace. They've dragged around 20 people in today and are doing a hell of a lot more tommorow, probably me included!

Daft Question but whats the best way to play it? Obviously I'm in the wrong big style, is it best to go in and be honest and plead for forgiveness?

I've never been in this situation before so I haven't got a clue how to play it and what to say?

Yes they will probably have proof so you are best off owning up and maybe saying you didn't realise it wasn't allowed and you won't do it again.

And if you really can't get away with saying you didn't know it wasn't allowed, the 'I know I messed up, I'm really sorry, it will not happen again' line is your best bet.

They probably have proof, so best to be in the shit just for the emails than for the emails and also being a big dirty liar.

Aye they know. And someone else who was in has had proof shown to them when they denied it.

So its best to suck up and apologise!

Is there anything in your Terms of Employment about the IT/Email Policy?

We have to sign an IT agreement before the IT Dept even connect us to the system so there's no claiming we didn't know personal use it against the rules when they catch us!

Probly best to go with the whole i didnt realise the extent of the problem which i have contributed to by forwarding emails and the such around work.

Cause if you say you didnt realise it was wrong and they bring out some kind of signed work agreement, they could screw you.

Yeah, I'd say so. And hope they appreciate your honesty.

It's not like you've done anything outrageously bad (have you? :p) just sent around some jokey emails, so what's the worst that could happen? At least you had the balls to admit it. They know anyway.

    Maybe they've been browsing thesite.org too:rolleyes:

Essentially those have been in today (I've just spoke to one of them) and they were asked if they had then shown proof and asked to justify it.

It is an 'investigation' at the moment. The final outcome lies with the managing directors!?!!

I've signed an IT Policy so I have confirmed I know the rules.

The only saviour is that if they fire 20 staff they'll be screwed :D

I'd just go in there and be honest and say sorry to be honest.

If everyone else has been doing it, they are hardly gonna sack you all.

Under no circumstances attempt to justify it! It's a trap.

The right answer is: I can't justify it. I broke the rules, and I'm sorry. I won't do it again.

What can they say back to that?

If this helps... the EXACT same thing happened at my old work a couple of months ago. Something regarding Gary Glitter... anyway! About 20 staff got taken into a disciplinary meeting and I went into one of them as a witness with one lad... they just said in this case it would be a final written warning. Which sounds like what they'll give you too, mate.

Just go in with your head down and apologise your arse off!
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Legally it's a sackable offence....
However, they are not gonna sack that many people, and dependant on their responses, you will either get a telling off or a final written.

Hope it went ok....and good luck

Good luck. We got bollockings where i used to work too.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    good luck on this one!!

i once got a bollocking for email and internet usage at a old job, that was about it, one guy got sacked, but he'd been on porn! what a idiot.

i couldnt work now without my access to the internet, msn and email to my buddies, its what keeps me sane most of the time!!

Depends what you've been forwarding around i'd imagine, if its just a harmless little (safe) joke you heard down the pub i think you'll be ok, if its videos of raging donkey porn then you might want to start worrying...

Had the meeting, took about 30 mins.

Still under investigation to be advised ASAP>

    Shitting it.

    Sounds about right.
Next you'll get an invite for a disciplinary (24hr notice) and they will let you know there and then which warning (probably) you gonna get...
    Good luck.

James, ALWAYS taker a witness into these meetings, it's really important. If you're part of your union, get them involved too!
  • JsTJsT Posts: 18,268 Skive's The Limit
Hmm, there was the person doing the meeting and an independant person logging it, who was conveniently also management. Not that I had a leg to stand on, they had a ton of proof, as they did for the other 20 odd people they've had in the office today.

I've got a nice big 3 A4 pages of 'Transcript of the Invesitgatory". Which includes such gems as:

Manager: "Why did you decide to send the message "Please call Mr Atkinson" on every line for 14 pages?
    Me: "Erm, I dont know"

Manager: "It is appropirate to send an email to your team leader saying "Please phone Mr Johnson you bald headed son of a bitch"?"
    Me: "No."

The final line is "This is a very serious matter and I am going to adjourne this meeting and consider whether further action is neccessary. You will be informed in due course. Do you have anything further to add?"
Me: "Yes, I am genuinely sorry for what I have done and I am aware it is very unproffesional"

    Oops :(

You've done all you can now mate.

Management can be absolute cocksuckers though, why they seem to be wasting so much time on shit that really doesn't matter makes no sense to me.

Hope it all works out and stuff.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Shit.

Dya know what the deal is with other people that have been called into the office? Like, is it all office banter or could they turn round and say that you've been abusing other employees or some such bollocks as well?

If you've got no previous disciplinary issues on your file, you'll probably end up with a final written warning and you'll be out the door if you put a foot wrong in the next twelve months.

That's what would happen where I work (I'm a Human Resources Administrator - I type up those investigation notes and final written warnings!).
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I think they're trying to get one or two people out of the office on gross misconduct, to be honest, and are dragging everyone over the coals to defend themselves against tribunal action.

Management only give a toss when they want something. There will be one person they want rid of.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
You've given yourself the best chance, given the circumstances. Hope things work out.

Although I agree that they probably want something, and all this hoo-ha is a long winded way of getting it. Sounds like a huge fuss over not that much. Just some slight profanity and run-of-the-mill office banter.
