'I've heard a lot about you'

What does this mean when people say it. It's really annoying. Do you think people mean it literally when they say it if your being introduced and stuff??:banghead:

It's a throwaway line that means that your mutual friend probably mentioned you at some point.

"I've heard a lot about you"
    "All good I hope"
    "Not at all"

Hmmph. Any time I hear this...it is bad.
In canteen at school circa 1999
    Head Girl: "You're _____ ______ aren't you?"
    Me: "yes...why?"
Head Girl: "I've heard a lot about you"
    Me: "about what exactly?"
Head Girl: "You nicked my neighbour's boyfriend"

Granted I was about 16 and the aforementioned neighbour had already dumped the b/f.....But since then I'm always paranoid when I hear it. :nervous:

it usualy means, i've heard something about you that you wouldn't want repeated either infront of your friends parents or partner...normally sexual...or maybe thats just me :(

In my case it usually (not always) meant "They told me what kind of a loon you are, so I'm here too to make fun of you pretending to be polite".

But I think in general it means only what it said: They've heard a lot about you. Which can be good or bad things, true or false.

I'm just like..."like what :|" and they ALWAYS say "oh, good things".

    They lie.

 Indeed, it's the same with me.

Though I often just use it as a conversation filler; I never disclose what I've heard though. Good to keep people on their toes :thumb:

    I worry more when I talk to someone for several hours, before the conversation goes like this;

Person: I have a very personal question to ask you.
Danny: Go ahead, what is it?
Person: Forgive me for asking, but... who are you?

How does that make sense if you've been talking for hours? Do they expect you to say "I'm the Guardian, hiding the biggest secret of humankind and battling demons in secret"?

A guy I met recently properly said that to me. Thing is I know what they've heard so I wasn't too concerned. I think it's a great thing to say just cause it always triggers some interesting conversations with me. Mostly sexual related rumours I've noticed as well.

Oh yes. Sometimes, they'll say "alright, I've heard absolutely nothing about you from anyone", which I take as a compliment.

It's a nice positive thing, usually. Or at least, it has been in my case.

I invited a friend round to a party, and he brought his friends round. One of them asked my name, I told them and he said, "Ah... so you're ___ I've heard a lot about you!"

Sure, I had pulled one of his friends, so that might explain it.
Also, turned out the guy I had invited to the party had a massive crush on me.

    The whole best friends scenario.

    Anyway. Yes.
Just means that they have heard a lot about you. But maybe just a little, rather than a lot.
