whether you're renting or buying, alone or in a couple/group.......what do you all consider to be essential items?
this may seem abit obvious, plates, cups, etc, but there's bound to be things people suggest that me or others haven't thought of.
So come on....get suggesting.
i say; toaster, kettle, cups+plates!!

Are we including appliances and stuff? In that case, microwave and George Foreman Grill.
 very true - I only realised this in the last year or so - I love my globals.
I've got a block full of Henkel Professional - a total joy to use.
Storage would be a good idea I think.
Try to buy stuff in bulk as well. You could try building some stuff as well.
Also scissors
nonononono i cut cheese too thick with a knife lol.
I'm not talking anything fancy, just one of these.
Beds, sofa, chairs, table, desk, shelves, cabinets, tv set, dvd player / HDR, stereo, computer, microwave, cooker, fridge, freezer, ironing board, iron, kitchen sink pot draining thing, pots, pans, cutlery, knives and other kitchen utensils such as big spoons, can operner and cheese grater, kettle, clock, towels, bed linen, curtains, hoover, food, tea bags.
That should get you started.
There are some cheese slicer things that aren't actually knives. We have one, but I can't remember what it's called.
I use a knife to cut me cheese
I'm not to be trusted with one of those  i managed to cut my finger on a normal dinner knife at the harvester once cutting open a roll.:grump:

Electric fan if you're moving in any time in the next six weeks
Laundry basket + clothes airing rack thing

Computer stuff - even if it is furnished, don't expect a decent computer desk or chair
CD/DVD Racks if there's no suitable shelves
Ooooh and extension wires, can't get enough of them.
You should try www.freecycle.org people give away stuff for free and depending on the rules in your area you can place a wanted add (some groups insist you offer something yourself first before posting a wanted message). You can just say you need things for your first home and see what emails you get. It's a good way to build up what you need and over time you can replace things with new (although some people do offer new stuff) when you can afford it.
