Hi...

Right now i have an offer for Materials Engineering in Medicine....at Queen Mary, London..........but i'm not sure if i want to do that.

I'm not in to the medicine thing anymore.....i could call the uni and ask 'em to change it to just Materials Engineering...but then i want to study physics...........but all i can see at the end of physics is teaching.

Then if i do decide to go for physics.....then....do i call up QMUL and ask them to change it...or do i decline this offer and go through clearing...

i'm just totally confused.......i've got exams aswell........

any advice.......thanks xx

I'm pretty sure that you could transfer to a physics course at QML if they've already offered you a place on a different course.

besides, there's plenty you can do with a physics degree... I just finished mine :p

If you really want to do physics then do physics! ("Add some fizz to your life with fizzics!" was my schools physics department motto)

There is so much you can do with a physics degree. Either directly related to it or using the skills acquired. A physics graduate is highly numerate, can analyse data, can relate theory to the real world, can write reports, can explain their ideas, can give presentations, can use complex computer systems and can work effectively in a team. These are all very transferable skills that are sought by employers so don't worry that all you'd be good for is teaching if that doesn't interest you.

With a physics degree you can specialise in (or go on to do a MSc in) medical physics which is also an option if you are still interested in the clinical setting.

Not saying that the other courses are bad as I don't know about them. I initially thought I wanted to do an engineering degree but realised just before applying that really it's the pure science that interests me more. And like you it was the fact that I couldn't see a clear career path in pure science that made me reluctant. But I know I made the right choice for me.

Good luck with whatever you decide :)

Thank you sooo much for your replies.

Same here Randomgirl, I applied for engineering...but now i realise that pure science interests me more....

Replicant...i bet you feel so smart! What are you going on to do now?

I'll only feel smart when I find out if I've passed it or not :p

I've applied (and been accepted, just waiting for my results now) for a MSc in astronautics and space engineering, so I get to design spaceships and stuff :thumb:

randomgirls right too, it's highly looked for degree, even if you don't go into anything technical as such, there are plenty of banking, investment, management and that kind of thing jobs out there. infact, I keep getting called by a company trying to recruit me as a manager for tesco

    Wow. Thats awesome! Good luck!

So you get to specialise in the 4th year?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
not as such, I've just completed a BSc, rather than an MSc, which means I can go to a different uni and do an MSc for a year now if I want :)

there are of course MSc courses you do 4 years straight at one uni, but I wasn't clever enough to get onto that one!

there's plenty of options open to you; 3 year BSc, 4 year BSc (with 1 year placement), 4 year MSc (With or without placement)...

once you've done a masters you could go do a Phd if you really wanted :)
