Had Britain shown Iceland's foresight over fishing and also stood up to the EU by not tolerating years and years of overfishing by the thieving Spanish in our waters British fish stocks wouldn’t be so low. But the damage is already done and Blair doesn't have the guts to stand up to the EU (as shown by his betrayal over the EU rebate). The EU is a farce anyway, it'll eventually implode - but we should still get out immediately. At the very least we deserve a referendum.

we need to protect our coral, they are beautiful and we're losing animals from our precarious planet all the time and this is just another example how humans are exploiting the habitats of others for our own greed and profit.
    thats officially crap.

did you know ...that the bible foretold a time when a third of all life in the oceans would have died?

Incidentally, do people think that their should be a limit on the amount of money that anyone can make from any natural resource? I just find it interesting that someone can lay claim to oil, water, trees, or any other natural resource. Sure charge people for extracting it, but how can anything belong to anyone, unless they specifically made it themselves?

this country veto'ed the proposal to form SMALL non fishing areas that despite their small size would allow fish to breed suffienctly!!!

not a limit as such but a big proportion of the profits should be given to a NGO who will try and undone the environmental destruction that has happen to make the area sustainable.

Wheresmyplacebo, the world will go up in a huge mushroom of smoke one day!

I'd hardly say it was the Spanish's fault, as overfishing has been rife for a long long time. And its not the EU's fault either, unless you're going to blame the decimation of Canada's Cape Cod on them too...

The EU is restricting fishing, but giving all countries a fair share. The Spanish and French included. It's just unfortunate that a fair share isn't enough for the people in the fishing industry who, of course, are 100% to blame for the destruction of north sea cod banks.

its a collective responsibility but local fishermen see it as their right to fish their shores wether or not the EU agrees, the EU is doing a lot but more needs to be done, fishing methods need to changed to be more selective, ie more open smaller nets
