Would really appreciate some advice on this.

I messed up my final exam this morning. Majorly. It wasnt lack of knowledge, i knew the answers to all of the questions and i used up the whole 3 hours

I fucked it up by not reading the instructions. We were given 8 Questions and had to choose 3 to write essays on.

I answered all 8.

:o

Shall i email my lecturer about it? It anonymous marking so im not sure that would be a good idea.

Will they take the first 3 as my answers? My best answers were towards the end :crying:

Or will they reject it completely?

I cant believe this. So pissed off, put so much effort and prep into it to do something as stupid as this.

Am i doomed? no really

It just happens to be an absolute cunt of a lecturer

I only got 45% for my coursework in this unit, so i cant rely on that

I dont know whether to just leave it and forget about it, fail and go back for re-sits, or whether to email my lecturer and probably still fail anyway

I have a feeling they will take the first 3 answers, which i thought were short answer questions so were only just under half a page each.

It was the practice exam questions that threw me off, it had 2 sections, the first 5 being short answer ones and the rest being essay questions. Its completely my own stupid fault for assuming it was the same format, but ive worked so hard for this exam to try to make up for the rubbish coursework i did, in hope i could buck up the final mark. Ive got so much knowledge about the subject, i wrote 14 pages of A4 sides! Ive blown it all.

I might just go hide in a corner and waste away now

I know this is a completely different exam and situation, but I imagine all exam markers must judge things fairly...

In our GCSE R.E paper, there were about 6 religions. Since we'd only studied Christianity, we were supposed to do,the questions on Christianity. (All sounds pretty logical)

My mate had a sudden moment of nuttiness and decided to do her work on the Hinduism questions.

They marked the questions and she got a D or something, but the school negociated with the exam board and as far as I know she got to retake it.

I don't have much to add, I'm gutted for you but hopefully - like scarlett said - it won't turn out as badly as you're probably imagining (the phrase "worst case scenarios" comes to mind).

In the meantime, try not to stress about it... though I'm sure that'll be a lot easier said than done. Positive thinking will at least do your stress levels a bit of good, hopefully! :)

I would email or even better try and go to see your tutor in person and explain what you have done.

I totally stuffed up one of my exams by err well missing it - i thought it was in the afternoon and it turned out to be in the morning. I totally freaked out, went to the office, freaked out some more, then got in to see the course tutor almost cried and said that i was due to get a first on that course (which was true, I ended up with a 2:1) and they let me go and take it in the afternoon session. However i still had to wait for 6 weeks before they told me weather it would be accepted or not.

Otherwise they would have made me retake the exam a year later.

I don't know weather they made an exception because they were really nice or because i was a particually good student but its always worth a try.

i however fear that they will just mark your first 3 answers.

Well ive done it, ive emailed my lecturer for that subject.

He's such an arse, i know he will say tough luck and see you at resits, or something similar

aww thats awful!! i hope they take marks from the questions with the best answers for your sake! if not it will be awful.

although saying that, im afraid my friend did the exact same thing for her A level final english exam and the examiner took the first 3 answers and not the last 2. (even though for her, she thought the best one was the fourth answer)

it might just be the case that the examiner person was a grumpy bastard though and just chose the first three to be nasty

im sure everything will turn out ok though one way or another :)

I know a lot of people that did that at GCSE - answered all questions instead of a set amount. I believe the examiners marked the first 3 (or however many) answers and just ignored the rest....

I really hope that doesnt happen. Because they will clearly be able to see from all the questions overall that i know loads, yet ignore them knowing the first 3 are what i thought to be short answer questions!

Cant believe i was so stupid :banghead: I know its my own stupid fault and its my own stupid consequences, but my grade (or non grade as it will be) wont actually be an accurate measure of my knowledge!

Take it easy, there's nothing you can do now, and for the record, I had a lecturer that made it clear that they'd mark the best if we managed to do more than necessary number of questions. Several lecturers actually. But either way, just try to forget it, relax.

if it makes you feel any better once i didn't turn an exam paper over and missed out half of the questions. i did rubbish in the ones i did answer and got a U!

hope it doesn't turn out too bad.

As easy as it is for me to say, the best thing you can do is try to forget about it until the results are given out. Try not to worry about it too much :)

They will most likely mark the best 3. I've also been told by the examinar in an actual exam that this was the case for me.

But all I can say is that if you answered almost 3 times as many questions as you should have, your probably looking about about 40%+ if you answered 3 of the questions quite well, hitting all the key points.

Which would pass the module right? if thats the case, and you pass, you probably wont be able to retake it.

    Thanks everyone

I have calmed down (slightly) now.

Ive faced the fact that i will fail, my first 3 answers i thought were suposed to be short answers so are only about 10 lines long, i emailed my lecturer and he is taking the first 3 answers. Therefore, ive no hope.

But, nothing i can do now. I will have to come back and re-take it in august, and only be able to get a maximum of 40% :( which is going to down-mark my degree, i will probably end up with a third now

    :(:(

Aww, how rotten! If it makes you feel any better, I was ungraded in IT at GCSE level :). Stupid hting is I was pretty good with computers - did all the DTP for the school magazine when I was 12, even taught a few teachers during my lunch-hour from time to time.

Went on to work in IT - firstly for the major IBM brokerage, specialising in laptops. Then I switched companies and worked out in the field, mainly covering government locations.

It really isn't the end of the world - you may have stuffed it up, but as said before these things aren't always too bad. Though it must suck, doing all those years of work and making a mistake at the final hurdle :(.

We still love you anyway, whether you're a first or a turd. Erm, third... ;)

 In general, that's the rule.

Since you have the rest of the summer to revise, it would give you quite an unfair advantage over everyone else who passed it first time if you could get a high mark, so in general if you fail an exam, you can resit in the summer but only to get a maximum of 40%.

Really sorry blah, but stay positive, it might not be so drastic as to drag your grade down to a third. And even if it does, having a third is no barrier to success of any kind. I know this because my bloke got a third in his degree, then did a Master's and is now earning quite a lot of money doing the exact job he wanted to do, and his third class degree hasn't held him back one bit.

Big hugs though, cos I know you must feel awful about it.
:o I didn't realise that, maybe it's not that here, I'm sure they would have mentioned it if it were.

The rules vary from university to university with regards to resits. At my university there are no re-sits in the same year so if you fail an exam this summer you would have to take a year out to resit it the following May in the large majority of departments.

That saves an email to my personal tutor. *sigh* I knew medics had resits, I hoped others did.

    Thanks for that, though!

at my uni if you have to re-take anything you can only get a maximum of 40. im sure thats the case at most places.
