They wouldnt need to. Michigan wouldnt refuse to hand him over to federal authorities. The state government of Michigan wouldnt protect Mcveigh from the Fed gov, they wouldnt supply training bases to keep his group trained and equipped.

Sorry but thats a completely stupid question. At least come up with a better analogy.

Yes, but only if the Klinton family were there.

You weren’t giving the Afghanis that chance a few days ago... But this isn't about scoring 'points', I'm just curious as to what would be happening now if the culprit wasn't from a county the US was already planning on invading.

How about if the culprit was French and in France? They can’t extradite him, as he would no doubt get the death penalty if found guilty, where would that leave us?

Bombing the crap out of france is fine by me.

eh? This whole thing escalated precisely because the Taleban refused to hand over Bin Laden. The US has asked them to hand him over from the very start.
wasn't from a county the US was already planning on invading.

The US was planning an invasion of Afghanistan before the WTC attacks? Care to explain how you know this when the rest of the world(including Bush apparently) doesnt

If the French govt supported his actions, harboured him, trained him and continued to protect him after the murder of 20k civilians in America then the same action would be taken against France.

Im a little confused as to your question. Are you saying that the US wouldnt act so strongly if Bin Laden were holed up in a nuclear power? I think the response would be exactly the same..America has stood up to nuclear powers before and this is worse than any terror attack in history.

This is a pathetic analogy really, because they we able to try and convict McVeigh. In fact they executed him. Isn't that EXACTLY what they would like to do to Bin Laden?

Aren't the FBI still trying to take down the right-wing groups in the US (well they were, but they seem to have their attention diverted for some reason...)

But what if Bin Ladin is in Norhern Pakistan and not Afghanistan?
    Whats the response now?
Pakistan has been a big ally of the US for years ,while at the same time supporting the taliban in afghanistan-from what ive read Ahmed Shah Massood complained several times to the US about facing Pakistani regular army troops in Afghanistan fighting with the taliban esp the massacre in mazar-el-sharif.
Pakistan also supports the recent arrival of Arabic Afghans in neighbouring Kashmir where a murderous civil war is in full swing.

The whole region is poverty stricken, religious fundamentalists have found an echo in societies where people exist on 5p a day.

If hes in Pakistan then the Pakistani authorities will turn him over. If they are willing to let the US launch an attack from their soil then they cant get much further away from the Taleban. The current Pakistan govt has said clearly they are going to help the US get Bin Laden.

If Bin Laden were in Pakistan and they were refusing to hand him over them im sure the response would be the same. I think we can assume that this isnt going to be a half hearted effort, the Americans really mean business here.

    And another thing!
How is US intervention going to make things better?
As soon as US troops arrive in Afghanistan all the different groups pro and anti taliban will join together to try to defeat the invader.
We should instead attempt reconciliation and help to modernise Afghanistan with material aid .

Hmm thats funny because the Northern Alliance are talking about working with the states. They are waiting to be contacted and wish to be consulted before any action is taken in the areas they control.

How exactly do you know that every Afghan is gonna join against the States? These people have been fighting each other for 10 years now..Are you privy to some information that the rest of the world isnt?

reconciliation??? While they still protect terrorists who blow up our buildings and kill 6000 people? I have no problem with sending them aid BUT only after they either hand of Bin Laden or we take him with force, removing the Taleban in the process.

The Pakistani government has little contol over the North West Fontier of Pakistan and its laws dont apply there.
It is peopled by the Pashtuns who exist on the other side of the border in Afghanistan as well and are the majority groupng in the area.
The Pakistani stratagey funded by the US was to fund extreme fundamentalist groups rather than more "normal" Afghan resistance groups against the russians.
And now Pakistan is reaping a whirlwind ,it has built up a huge muhajadin factory in the north and now it has to take allow an assault on Afgahnistan-an impossible position!

I suspect the main muhajadin will side with the Taliban eg Golbuddin Hekamatyar(with 20,000 troops) who has already pledged support.

--But the 'them' are not holding Bin Laden. The 'them' are living on £2.50 a month and are destitute and starving due to the combined efforts of a government they did not choose and now the UN's decision to cut food aid next month.

This 'them' have nothing to do with Bin Laden, they are much more interested in staying alive by any means than playing politics with the US or anyone else.

The irony is, it is the 'them' who will be the one's to suffer the most from this. Not Bush, not Bin Laden and not the Taleban. Same as always, it's the people who take the flak from all sides. No one will win from this.

The people of afghanistan need aid, now. It doens't matter what their illegitimate government does or doesn't do. These people have no influence over that and shouldn't be treated as complicit.

All well and good saying that but would you be willing to drive or fly in supplies to those people? If there was a way to safely get aid to the actual people and not to the regime in power then thats great. Unfortunately Afghanistan is not a friendly place and theres a finite number of aid workers willing to risk their lives.
