Book Burning

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I just read that a church in Georgia, USA recently organised a book burning. Harry Potter books (works of Satan, apparently) and so on all to go up in smoke.

:: Quickly splashes some water over face as overcome by another series of visions of Nazi Germany ::

Sorry, but I find that kind of thing quite disturbing. If I could, I'd be tempted to lock the people involved in the Stone Age and tell them to evolve into a more responsible species.

I wonder if it would be possible to bring a court case against organised religion, banning it on the grounds that it interferes with freedom of thought / expression. If so, I'd be very amused.

An act of defiance is slightly different.

But I can only assume that you feel that censorship is not a big issue either then?

I guess free speech isn't an issue in Georgia.

It is unfortunate that Georgia is in the "Bible Belt" of the US, or that there is even a such a thing. Here we go again, FEAR. Fear of something they (church) don't understand, or believe to exist. What will they burn next, witches? Now do you see why I have guns? Never again the burning times!

The thing is, they probably have guns, too.

No doubt, and here is the thing, they might have badges also.

Face it, the gun is here to stay. I do hope that I never have to draw my weapon in self-defense again. When it is kill or be killed and you have no question that the person coming at you means to do you harm, it becomes a matter of survival. When your family is with you, the stakes get even higher.

    Ah, a dose of realism.
Of course, you have to assume that your survival and that of your kin would be good... but that's hardly something you can think about in the middle of an average gunfight.

Do you see the irony in those two statements. You own the gun because you FEAR them. They own guns because they FEAR you.

You both live in FEAR and yet you believe yourself to be 'free'.

  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Yes, I see. I also stated I have freedom. Being free is a state of mind. But, are we ever truely free? It comes down to choices. Each choice that we make effect every other aspect of our lives. I have made one choice, and you another. Who is right? Both and neither.

Course we are. We can make any decision we want to - I can go and mow down 100 people if I like. There is nothing to stop you doing that. You can do whatever the hell you want - but there will be consequences of your actions. Jews were free under Hitler, they could either do as he says or not do it. They had the choice. They would have been killed not doing as they were told, but there was a choice. Incidentally they were killed both ways so it's probably a poor example.

A slave is free. He can do what he wants. He can disobey his master - he'll be punished but he can do it.

There is always an alternative - you may not like it, it may be stupid, it may be the wrong choice, but it's always an option.

Funny you limey Brits talk about US churches burning books. What about your sacred crown burning books like the Age of Reason.

Sorry, I am not a troll. I have made a few posts here, and on more than one topic. I have even agreed with several regulars here.

Churches in the USA are 100% privately owned and run. While I personally don't see a point in burning books, I don't have a problem with anyone doing it on their own time. When the government starts burning books, then I'll start worrying.

    A Jewish writer said in 1934 (i think), when confronted by scenes of the Nazis burning pyres of 'unclean' literature;

"where now they burn books, perhaps I fear one day they shall burn people."

even the greatest of landslides are started by the tiniest movement of stones.

just thought that was a relevant point....

The American jounalist William Shirer, who was the Berlin Correspondent (NY Times?) for all of the peacetime Nazi years, said something similar. The saying, "Where one burns books, one ultimately burns men," is quite well known, and has many claimants to its origin. It is, however, quite true.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Perhaps it was Shirer after all. chillingly prophetic.

:: Shakes head slowly to jog memory ::

No, I think the "burn books, burn men" quote is from a German. Shirer did write a piece on the book-burnings, though. I have access to a dictionary of quotations, so I'll look it up and post it when I get the chance.

Okay, the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations says:
    The ODC:
    Heinrich Heine 1797-1856
    German Poet

    Dort, wo man Buecher
Verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen.

Wherever books will be burned, men also, in the end, are burned.
