i have mixed feelings.

my understanding of it is that section 28 was introduced to prevent the active promotion of homosexuality in schools. i don't think that homosexuality should be promoted over heterosexuality, or vice versa, just that most people are straight and some are gay, simple as that. but section 28 is preventing schools teaching anything about homosexuality for fear that they might be prosecuted. several of my male friends are gay and they recieved no support or help at school when bullied. i think that it should definitely be amended, but i don't know how, or what would be included....actually i don't really know what i'm rambling on about!

yeah i thought it was to do with schools and homosexuality. but it woulda been nice to have it explained straight off, thanks opera bitch

i think that children should be taught about homosexuality, what it is, around how many people in the population are gay so they get an idea, how it isnt wrong, and what to do if they think they might be gay perhaps (later on, last few years of secondary school maybe?). i think its stupid teachers should fear prosecution. i dont think they should "promote" either way of life. just teach about what each one involves, and explain that some people have different feelings to members of the opposite/same sex than most people do.

i dunno, something like that anyway, im not very coherent today.

I no I'm probably going to get slated for this but I cannot understand those that are gay. I have met a couple of gay people and have got on with them as I would anyone else. It's just the gay side to them that I don't and never will be able to understand. I may be homophobic but not because I think they're going to try it on with me. I just believe it's not natural. I do believe it's an illness (god I'm going to get slated for that!) and if everyone was gay the human race would come to an end. We are the only species as far as I know that prcatices homosexuality. This I put down to us being the most inteligent species on the planet. It may be gentic or somthing to do with the mind but I believe it's not right. I see the point of sex in nature is to reproduce, is it not.

If I meet someone who's gay I don't treat them any differently because of it. It's just one side to their personality I will choose to ignore, I can't accept it. If I did I wouldn't be able to get on with them.

I don't believ that children should be taught about homosexuality in school. If I had a kid I would not like it being taught about homosexuality until they were at least 14+, if at all. I say leave it to the parents. Children are impressionable and being taught abought it so young may give them it's the idea that it's right. I suppose many people think it is. I don't.

i think the main reason why it was introduced was because people were worried that homosexual teachings would persuade young people to become homosexual over heterosexuality, or something like that. i think that encouraging people who would normally be straight to try out homosexuality is wrong to be honest, same as telling a gay person to live life as a straight one. that's why i don't think section 28 should be totally repealed, especially to protect young children (eg. primary school age), who very likely haven't experienced any sexual feelings yet.

ermmm, but i don't really know that much about this topic at all, and if anyone would care to inform me better i would be grateful

I think that you have provided a perfect example of why clause 28 should be repealed. I'm not going to slate you for your comments - it's just sad that our 'education' system cannot correct them.

I have young children, and I would rather that they knew the 'truth' about the world than listen to people telling them that homosexuality is an illness.

Clause 28 was brought in by the right wing Tory party to prevent the far left of the political spectrum from promoting homosexuality. Partly becuase the left went to far - same a political correctness really. Unfortunately, and as usual, the law is an ass and prevents balanced teaching.

Personally, gay or straight, you still breathe, eat and shit like the rest of us so does it really matter?

That was basically the reason, but I don't see how that works really. Does the teacher stand up and say "Right, some men like to have with other men and then they get battered by scallies and bigots" and all the lads in the class go, "Ohhhh, that sounds like fun"? I don't get it at all.
i think that encouraging people who would normally be straight to try out homosexuality is wrong to be honest, same as telling a gay person to live life as a straight one.

Teaching people about homosexuality doesn't mean telling them to go and try it. I was taught about Hitler at school but i've never tried to invade a country and wipe out an entire religon. It's educating people about different ways of life, the same as we are taught about different religons.

Since when have primary school children had sex education? It's news to me.

Saying it's an illness was a bit harsh. I regret my choice of words but I can't help the way I feel. That is my natural response to it. I don't treat them any differently, it's just one trait of their personality I dislike. If it makes them happy I suppose it has to be that way.

On reflection I suppose section 28 would be a bad thing. It's just that if I had kids I'd try bring them up into hetrosexual aldults. I think it would be natural for any parent to try and guide their kid through life the way they want. I see the benifits and I see the drawbacks. It would be nice to be able shield them from homosexuality altogether but I know that's not I good idea. It confuses me cause I have mixed feelings.

Cheers for listnening to my opinion anyway.

Skive'n'dive - What if you met a gay man but didn't find out he was gay till you'd known him for a while?

Would you start to act differently towards him?

Don't know. I'd like to think I wouldn't treat him any differently. It would just be something about him I'd feel uncomfortable about. I can't help the way I feel. I'm not totallt anti gay or anything. I just don't understand it and I don't think I ever will.

The trouble with sexuality is that the government assumes (quite rightly) that it is something that must be learned - therefore it must also be taught (*bzzz* wrong answer!).

Personally I don't think value-free sex eduaction is possible. I would dearly love to be proved wrong, though.

i cant believe that an otherwise fairly reasonable poster is coming on here saying that homosexuality is an illness and wishes his children could be shielded from it entirely. thats really beyond me.

but then as long as he doesnt go round victimising people for their sexuality and/or beliefs or trying to force his upon people, then there isnt really anything wrong. i suppose.

but skive, you cant bring up a child to be gay or straight depending on your preference. its something within you, i mean if someone tried to "make" you gay, they wouldnt be able to would they, because you're inherently straight. its just the same, only the reverse, for gay people.

Did I not say that I regreted my choice of words i.e illness. Also I said that I would like them to be shielded because I don't want them to be homosexual but also admited that would be wrong. In MY perfect world there would be homosexuals (That is not intended to be as bad as it reads - I just can't put it any other way). But I know the world isn't perfect. It dosn't mean I want to rid the world of gay ppl. If I had a kid and they told me they were homosexual I'd find i difficult but I wouln't love them as my son/daughter any differently. Can you not see what I'm trying to say. Can't you respect my view. I respect yours and I would of any gay person.

I don't like homosexuality. Dosn't mean I can't like homosexuals. Theres more to people than the way they 'swing'.

Knew I'd get some bad reactions.
But these are my feeling not my opinions. I see a difference. I can't change the way I feel. It's in me to feel uncomfortable by homosexuals as much as it is for them to be homosexual. I reckon I'm a pretty tolerant and reasonable person. Tell me if I'm wrong.

If I was going round toeing gay people in fair enough you have a right to go on one at me. I'd stick up for a gay person if they were attacked by homophobics. I don't go on one at people who like homosexuality as ppl shouldn't go on at me for disliking it.

well i did. since about age 9 or something like that....

even though the law was brought in to protect young people from being too influenced by the Left, it's gone too far over the other way. that's why i do think it should be reformed, but not completely repealed.

Actually there is increasing evidence for a genetic influence for those who are gay, so in a way it could be a type of illness. Not that I'm homophobic, just keeping up with the R&D.

It's because of genetics that I have eyes.

Hardly an illness is it?

What I think Lord of Little is trying to say is that it could be a gentic dissorder that can be inherited such as heamophillia (spelling?). I think it's a good point. I'm inclined to think he may be right.

Downs syndrome is past on thru gentnetics and that is an illness

okay, where do I start?

Downs syndrome is NOT an illness. As I said - it is no different to having brown hair, red hair, blue eyes or anything else that is passed on through genetics. Same with haemophilia, blindness, deafness or any other genetic 'disorder'.

'Illness' means that you are unwell - each of the conditions are mentioned relate to what someone IS - it is the able bodied that decide that these are something people 'suffer' from.

Homosexuals CAN reproduce. Just not with each other. Being gay doesn't make you infertile.

I think this topic has gone way off subject.

If Skive'n'Dive doesn't understand homosexuality and 'gayness' then fair enough.

I don't really understand people who start fights for no reason, but that doesn't mean I want them all dead(S'n'D, I know you don't want all gay people dead, please don't take offence)

MOK - I didn't mean that reproductive thing as the way you read it. But I'm sure you know what I meant.

Jeffrey is superbly diplomatic (thats a compliment). I agree this topic has gone off course. It's probably my fault and all I've tried to be is honest. If people don't like that I'm sorry. That is the way I feel.

It wasn't really your fault. I think it was just a bad reaction to your views.

I'm just glad you were honest.
