Where are you living, a five-star hotel.

£750 a month? You're being fleeced something shocking there. Unless you're counting food and bills too, but even then, that's steep.

Why isn't this in the home thread or are you a student? If so, does that include your tuition fees and stuff?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Not my tuition fees but everything else. My rent is 400 a month, gas/electricity, food, socialising, books, travel budget. Its soooo expensive here.

I survived in Edinburgh for 4 years on much less than £7500 a year.

EDIT: And I don't understand how your rent is £400 a month unless you are really living in posh accommodation. Average student rent in Edinburgh is between £230 and £270 a month. Even my halls weren't £400 a month.

Halls in St. Andrews are £100 a week absolute minimum (self catering) and Manchester is £80 for self catering too (depending on where u go), so £400 is about right, mine will probably cost more!

    I know.

However, having been through it at Edinburgh very recently, £400 is overpriced. Unless the OP is staying in the posh quarter of Pollock Halls (where they don't need to worry about food) then £400 is waaaaaay too much for your average Edinburgh student accommodation. Even my nice university self-catered flat was less than that. It was about £260 a month.

It was about £260 a month.

That's how much a shared flat is too. In Marchmont, which isn't a shitty dive area.

    £400 a month? Fucking hell.

Marchmont is my point of reference as that is where I lived the majority of those 4 years. And it is a good area, considering there are lots of students there.

    Lovely area

It has a nice atmosphere because it's so studenty.

I pay £360 a month for my flat in uni halls, but I'm in London Plus about another £50 a week on food/going out, lucky I live just round the corner from uni and there a lot of pubs near by, so I don't spend much on travelling unless I got in to central London.

I paid £450 p/m in first year to stay in Pollock Halls, but it was catered so didn't have to about food (or bills).

I find that most of the nice flats round Edinburgh are £300 p/m upwards.

Paid £250 p/m last year to live in a dive on South Clerk street.

I'm paying £330 p/m where I'm living at the moment but it is a really nice flat in a really good location.

So far this year including my accomodation I've spent at least £5,000. £7,000 really isn't a bad estimate for first year including socialising and books etc.

I'm paying like.. £350 a month in Surrey.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Why is student accomodation so expensive anyway? Judging by the quality of most student flats, I would expect to pay those sorts of prices per month between about 3 of us, if I wasn't a student.

I paid £250 a month to live in a really nice flat just off South Clerk Street. You need to shop around but there are some ace flats for £250-£270/month.

    Oh well.

Its as expensive as you make it.

Looking at the figures in more detail, I'm noticing just how expensive it really is. They say university's an investment - a bloody big one at that. £100 a week for 52 weeks, plus deposit, any other renting charges, maybe bills... what the hell am I committing myself to?

Firstly, most students aren't there for all 52 weeks. Secondly, even I don't pay £100 a week for my accommodation, and I live in an expensive house because its only me and the other half. And I live in a damn expensive city. It really is as expensive as you make it.

I was referring to shared housing at the time, but point taken.

I lived in shared housing in Edinburgh and I paid a max of £250 a MONTH not a week or anything. And Edinburgh is an expensive city.

Like Maria said, it is only as expensive as you make it. If you want to live in absolute luxury, then expect to pay more. However, if you need something semi decent then don't pay over the odds.

I paid about 67 a week in manchester for halls (that was inc. all bills) and now i'm paying 240/month for a house (200 next year) Surely you can find somewhere cheaper?

When were you there though? Renting prices tend to increase year to year sometimes quite significantly. I know myself and others are paying much more than my sister was a few years back.

    I finished last year.

And my brother is still there and his rent is about £230 in an alright flat in Marchmont.

Edinburgh, like most places I suppose, is only as expensive as you want it to be.

Pish even I don't pay £400 a month and I live in extortionate private city centre halls with an en-suite. That said I have spent a fucking lot of money this year. But I know more about budgeting now and stuff. hopefully. [/cries in a corner]

    Citylets

Has all the listings for flats available to rent in Edinburgh.

Searches list flats from cheapest to most expensive. Most of the flats in nicer areas (I searched Marchmont 3 bed) are £300 per person upwards from the outset.

You could always live in a different area and some landlords convert a lounge into a bedroom which makes it cheaper but it just depends what you're looking for.

Newington tends to be less expensive but you can still expect to pay close to and above £300 (looking at citylets).

I don't care what citylets says. I am telling you, from personal experience, that accommodation in Edinburgh does not have to be £300+. Simple as.
