According to the Daily Telegraph: "Michael Howard, the former Conservative leader, has announced he will stand down as an MP at the next election. Mr Howard said he had been privileged to have been an MP for more than 20 years but it was now time to move on." >> Details >>
Well, Michael Howard's made some huge contributions to public life in his years as an MP, from his stint as Tory leader to the time Jeremy Paxman had to ask him the same question thirteen times, and I wish him well for the future.
But this is where I get cynical. Not about Mr Howard, but about MPs. Rules dictate they have to serve for 26 years as Members of Parliament before they are allowed the full pension. Bearing in mind he was in the cabinet as well, and bearing in mind he's still in good health, Howard can now make a fortune. Yep, I do wonder what it's like being in a job where you are able to vote yourself massive pay rises. I wonder what it's like knowing you stand to make your million after leaving politics. Public service? Not a hope. It just provides a reminder of how out-of-touch and distant our politicians have become.
Now, I'll hand over to any other honourable member who wants to have their say...

His retirement is well deserved and I’m sure he’ll still have an active role in politics through the party and in the Lords but it is unfortunate that he’ll never serve in government again.
Hee hee
Let's hope he doesn't get replaced by a Labourite, though :sour:
It’s quite sad that you’re filled with such hatred towards a fellow human being – to the extent that you covet a slow and painful death for them. Still given your supposed concern for the working class I guess it’s slightly disheartening for you that somebody born into poverty, the son of a refugee could go on to become a first class Conservative politician.
I have to say that there’s no way I would ever wish a ‘slow painful’ death amongst even the most treacherous and nastiest elements of the left, whilst despising the likes of Galloway and Scargill I would never wish such ill upon them. I am very grateful that I’m above your primitive and basic outlook towards those you essentially disagree with – your intense intolerance for those that don’t subscribe to your own personal views of defunct and backward Socialism displays what a nasty yet simple person you are.
He comes across as hopelessly right wing, and to be honest, judging by the disgraceful campaign the Tories ran at the last election, as a far right wing nasty bigot. Maybe he did not agree with his own manifesto, but if that is the case he showed poor judgement in allowing such nauseating campaign to run.
That even Ann Widdecombe thinks the man is a tad sinister is quite telling.
I stand by what I say. I hope he dies a slow painful death. His policies have been responsible for the misery of thousands of people. Fuck him and fuck you too.
Whats Howard dont thats any different from Blair, perhaps he wouldnt have been so stupid as to blindly follow the Americans into Iraq
I hope Blair dies a painful death too. But Howard specifically for the 1994 CJB. Cunt.
Good analysis.
I think you're getting confused with neo-liberalism there. Twat.
Are you on drugs?
*worried*
They're all scum.
Did I say that? Fuck me, not too bright today, even by your standards are you?
As opposed to your (and disillusioned's) brand of far right lunacy you mean?
