Michael Howard standing down as an MP

SystemSystem Posts: 8,649 Staff Team
According to the Daily Telegraph: "Michael Howard, the former Conservative leader, has announced he will stand down as an MP at the next election. Mr Howard said he had been privileged to have been an MP for more than 20 years but it was now time to move on." >> Details >>

Well, Michael Howard's made some huge contributions to public life in his years as an MP, from his stint as Tory leader to the time Jeremy Paxman had to ask him the same question thirteen times, and I wish him well for the future.

But this is where I get cynical. Not about Mr Howard, but about MPs. Rules dictate they have to serve for 26 years as Members of Parliament before they are allowed the full pension. Bearing in mind he was in the cabinet as well, and bearing in mind he's still in good health, Howard can now make a fortune. Yep, I do wonder what it's like being in a job where you are able to vote yourself massive pay rises. I wonder what it's like knowing you stand to make your million after leaving politics. Public service? Not a hope. It just provides a reminder of how out-of-touch and distant our politicians have become.

Now, I'll hand over to any other honourable member who wants to have their say...

Woo Hoo. No more bullshit lies about his local NHS services... Cunt.

A real loss, an excellent politician that would have made a great Prime Minister. As Home Secretary from 1993 he oversaw an actual 15% decrease in crime – a shame Labour Home Secretaries have not built upon that achievement.

His retirement is well deserved and I’m sure he’ll still have an active role in politics through the party and in the Lords but it is unfortunate that he’ll never serve in government again.

It’s quite sad that you’re filled with such hatred towards a fellow human being – to the extent that you covet a slow and painful death for them. Still given your supposed concern for the working class I guess it’s slightly disheartening for you that somebody born into poverty, the son of a refugee could go on to become a first class Conservative politician.

I have to say that there’s no way I would ever wish a ‘slow painful’ death amongst even the most treacherous and nastiest elements of the left, whilst despising the likes of Galloway and Scargill I would never wish such ill upon them. I am very grateful that I’m above your primitive and basic outlook towards those you essentially disagree with – your intense intolerance for those that don’t subscribe to your own personal views of defunct and backward Socialism displays what a nasty yet simple person you are.

I think the Tories fucked up big time by making him the leader at the previous term. Howard will forever be associated with the old Tories (and everything that comes with it, sleaze and all), with Thatcherism and with that Paxman interview.

He comes across as hopelessly right wing, and to be honest, judging by the disgraceful campaign the Tories ran at the last election, as a far right wing nasty bigot. Maybe he did not agree with his own manifesto, but if that is the case he showed poor judgement in allowing such nauseating campaign to run.

That even Ann Widdecombe thinks the man is a tad sinister is quite telling.

The polls disagree. I dont think the Tories could have ever won the last election, however Howard did increase the amount of seats they had. He was all those things you mention, however he was also a pretty skilled debator who could face Tony Blair and had a sembelance of leadership and media savvyness (the failing of William Hague, who was an excellent politician and debator, but little else).

I stand by what I say. I hope he dies a slow painful death. His policies have been responsible for the misery of thousands of people. Fuck him and fuck you too.

All you people saying he is a cunt who should die a slow painful death are all seriously pathetic, you know. How petty and childish and lacking of intelligence do you have to be to be able to say nothing better that that...

I wonder how much of a decrease in crime our beyond useless government has managed in nine years. Probably nowhere near as much as he managed in four years, we can be sure of that.

And the bonkers left-wing dogma you stand for has been responsible for generations of children being failed miserably by the education system. It's contributed no end to the breakdown of the family, the rise in lawlessness, the loss of respect in society... will you now admit that this extreme brand of left-wing dogma has failed Britain miserably?

I think you're getting confused with neo-liberalism there. Twat.

Alright, let's turn this round a little. What politicians do you like? Which ones do you agree with the most?

So, whenever you hear that one is standing down from Parliament, your reaction would be exactly the same as with Michael Howard?

Calm down, don't insult other board members whatever ever you feel about those of the night.

Its OK for disillusioned to insult me though is it?

That seemed like a fair point to me. To Blagsta, the idea someone could believe in anything other than an extreme brand of far-left dogma is anathema.

As opposed to your (and disillusioned's) brand of far right lunacy you mean?

Lower taxes, less state interference, rolling back the welfare state to those who actually need it rather than spongers with 14 kids in council houses... sounds very rational.
