Asylum Seekers

I was just wondering what everyone's opinions were. There's been a lot of debating in the media about this topic, and the country seems split over it. What do you think?

shoot them all? no, that would be mean

seriously, i think asylum seekers should all be given the opportunity, but those that do not fulfill the criteria should not be allowed asylum.

but, then again, i don't know an awful lot about it. since it's not the country i happen to live in, it's not seomthign that directly affects me.

Look into these tired eyes. See something you might recognise.

I think you have to look at the whole thing in a different light.
The entire population of England and Wales is made up migrants. At some point or other in time one of your ancestors will have come from another country.
The only countries in the UK to escape this are Ireland and Scotland.
Therefore a Scotsman or Irishman has, technically "purer" blood than any of us, as they do not have the ethnic mix.
To say we should turn away ALL asylum seekers is extremely unfair, as this isnt even the problem. The problem is that the media has blown it all out of proportion. There are currently 100,000 asylum seekers living in the UK, because of the Media you think, 100,000! Bloody hell, thats a lot. It isnt, Germany alone is home to over a million asylum seekers.
And what do you suggest we do with the genuine refugees? Send them back? MAny are here to escape a life of persecution, and maybe even death. I personally would have no trouble turning away someone from Russia or the USA, as they are reletively stable countries. But would you be able to deport a serbian asylum seeker fleeing from Albania or Kosovo? Or how about someone from China who refuses to live under communism? Would you rather they were executed for their beliefs? The term Asylum means a Safe haven, a place where someone should be able to live without fear of being persecuted or killed. Even with the influx at the moment, eventually after 1 or 2 generations you wouldnt be ablt to tell the difference between them or any other British person anyway, the only things that mark them as different are not being able to join the Armed forces, or having parents who believed they were coming to a country where their children would be able to grow up, without fear of war or famine.
I think you should think a lot more carefully before you say we should send asylum seekers back, as in many cases we would be sending them to their deaths.

Back in the 60's the uk govt launched a drive to encourage immigrants from areas with plentiful workforces cos we had a labour shortage. we didn't deal with them in the right way, and now we have serious underlying race problems in this country.

these asylum seekers come to britain because they see it is a liberal, accepting, fair and democratic society - an ideal that we britons like to think exists. if we can't get the immigration problem right this time, we will have destroyed that ideal, and that raises big questions about just how 'fair' the uk is.

there was a report published a few days ago that claimed that a large proportion of asylum seekers are trained in vital skills - medical etc. people complain that 'they shouldnt be taking our jobs', but do they really care about whether the person who saves them from a heart attack in a fully-staffed hospital (!) is of proper british descent or an immigrant? these people shouldn't be looked upon as parasites and nuisances, but should be welcomed in to our society and have their potential realised. perhaps that way we can avoid a repeat of the racist sentiment that swept the country last time this was a major issue.

Finally, i think the various parties should stop using the asylum seekers issue as a political cash cow - particularly but not exclusively tories. all of them view this as either a vote-grabber or something to be shoved under a rug somewhere. that is juts wrong. this is not a simple cut and dried political issue - these are peoples lives and families we are talking about! start taking it seriously, and not treating asylum seekers as sub-human.

What sort of society are we to refuse someone the chance of a better life.
there is plenty of food, housing and anything else that is needed to live, it is only peoples selfishness, and greed that says we cannot support people from other countries.
without these unwanted aliens it would only be a matter of time before society collapeses.

I don't think anyone that isn't from this country should be allowed to stay here permanently. I was watching a wildlife program the other night and it was about the wild dingos in Austrailia. The people went and took some of the wild dingos and turned them into domesticated animals which then in turn bred with other animals and made the dingos into half breeds. There was then this Island setup which protected the dingos and only full breed ones were allowed and no domesticated dogs of any kind were allowed to be on the island.
I see the same thing happening to the people in the UK by allowing people who aren't from this country come in and turn us into people that simply are not British. Of course these people would claim they are British but it simply isn't true. All they are is imports.

HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT. sorry, i'm usually quite rational and acepting of other people's arguments, but I really must disagree in the strongest terms about this.

What you are essentially suggesting is a policy of racial purity - this kind of thing was what caused apartheid in south africa and the USA, and eventually led to the Holocaust in Nazi Germany.

There is a concept in biology known as 'hybrid vigour', which occurs when different organisms from the same species breed, allowing the offspring to inherit the best qualities of both. the same is true of the human race. if the british tried simply to maintain a pure bloodline, we wuld all be dead from horrific genetic disorders that are passed on and worsened from generarion to generation. Lack of hybrid vigour is what plagued the russian royal family, leaving them all demented or haemophiliac. hybrid vigour is a sure-fire way of maintaining a healthy population.

the political implications of your suggestion for this country are even more staggering. a famous case in the 19th century, the don pacifico affair, concerned a man with tentative links to british citizenship. this affair provoked great debate on much the same subject; what it is to be british. in the end, the prime minister, lord palmerston, spoke in the commons, saying that
"any man who so chooses should be allowed to roam this earth, knowing he is safe from harm by the proclamation of three words 'citus britannicus sum' - 'i am a british citizen' and that with these words he has the full protection of her majesty's government."

the same is roughyl true today; anyone who ahs a genuine claim or desire to be british, no matter how tenuous the legality, should be allowed that right. Britishness is not something taht should be restricted to a few 'racially pure' citizens, but a right of choice to be extended to anyone who has sound basis for declaring him or herself British. this nation's entire society has been built on the ability of the individual to choose, rather than the authorities. the same applies with british citizenship.

in conclusion, it is absolutely unnaceptable to try and keep britain a racially elitist nation. that is a route that has already been explored in the past to the most horrific extent. these immigrants want to be part of the great, accepting, multicultural society that is their ideal of britain. to deny them that is to deny every liberty that the british people have fought and died for over the last eight centuries. we can never afford to make the same mistakes as in the past - we must look to the future, which i believe lies securely with a healthy influx of immigrants. to pursue any other course of action is to court disgrace and disaster.

I think the british immigration laws are far too strict.

I moved to England when I was 4 years old. My family moved there because my dad got a job at Oxford University. After living there for 4 1/2 years, we moved to Canada for 6 months for my dad's sabattical, sort of like an extended holiday. Then we moved back to England. My parents got divorced a year later, a year after that my dad moved back to America, and a two years after that our visas ran out.

Now, in order to claim citizenship, you have to have lived in the UK for 5 years. We'd basically lived there for 9, but because we had a 6 month sabattical break, we had to start over. So they were only counting the 4 years since we had been back from Canada.

England was all I could remember. I'd only ever gone to English schools, I had an English accent, I considered myself to be English, my parents had been paying taxes for 9 years, my mum had a very stable job at Oxfam, and both of us really wanted to stay.

But they wouldn't renew our visas because my parents were divorced. We'd moved to England because my dad had a job that absolutely no one else could possibly fill as well as him. If there had been a European person who had been as eligable for the job then they would have given it to them, but that wasn't the case. So when dad left, our rights to be in England left with him.

So basically, I got kicked out of the country that I considered home. I know America isn't the most awful place in the world (far from it!) and it wasn't like my life was in danger because we got kicked out of the UK, but it affected my life in a really negative way. For all the childhood I can remember, I considered myself to be English. When I was a teenager I was suddenly thrown back to America, and had to adjust to a different culture. Now I'm fully Americanized (and I hate to say it, but I sound about 90% American), but I don't feel American. To me, home is still Oxford... but I know that I'll probably never be able to go home for more than a couple weeks for the rest of my life. I still feel out of place here in the US, and I always will. There's just a nagging in the back of my mind that I don't belong.

So <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/mad.gif"> to the British immigration laws!!!
