Support for the fuel protesters

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I fully support the blockade of oil refinery's. I think the level of taxation on petrol is far too high. If the same level of taxation were applied to a "mars bar", it would cost £2.31!!

Tony Blair should back down and bow to the views of the majority of the populace, and reduce the price of petrol.

What are other peoples opinions?

I agree with Tony Blair's descision because he did it in the intention of trying to clean up the environment. Although he should give some sort of benefits to people who have to drive a certain distance to work and to people who's job is based around driving.

TONY BLAIR SHOULD NOT BACK DOWN TO THE BLACKMAIL THOUGH, these people have no regard for other people and are fucking this country up. They say that they aren't hurting other people because they are letting fuel through for ambulences and school transport, but who's going to drive the transport? they surely won't drive themselves.
Did you know that the NHS is in crisis? there are four days worth of blood transfusions left and the hospitals are quickly running out of medicine. To make things worse, beds are filling up because there's no transport to take them home after treatment. People are having to wait longer for operations that they've been waiting for for months.
You can hardly feel sorry for the protesters now. I'm all for standing up for what you believe in, but when you're hurting other people and blackmailing parliament, you have to find another way.

Public rebellion is sometimes the only way to make the government actually listen.

The government is awash with money right now because of the extortionate taxes they charge us on everything.

That stupid bloody dome is proof of this.

They are just using scare tactics with all this talk about the emergency service in crisis.

Lets not back down now. We've gone this far. The government will have to back down sooner or later. They have the power to do so, therefore this is in their hands too.

GwaiMui, as usual you make a compelling, rational argument that I completely agree with.

As for it affecting people. I am disabled, had a consultant outpatient appointment cancelled, and don't have petrol to get to my physio appointments - but I don't care!

This government had better start listening to the people. They had a mandate to govern for a term of ofice by the people, for the people. Tony Blair seems to have forgotten that, me thinks power has corrupted him somewhat!!!!!

LOL derby. Me Thinx Blair is just as much of a fascist as the Thatcher bitch! The new labour party stands for the old conservative party and they were not far off the nazis!

We like to think that this country is democratic but it is far from it.

The people are speaking and the government has no choice but to listen.

While we r at it we should be under London Bridge singing the Sex Pistols version of 'God Save the Queen' because the bloody monarchy are costing us shit loads in taxes every year too!

Definately go for the singing Gwai, though I'll have to walk down the M1, as no f**ker will have the petrol to get down there!

POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!!

I think that the people who should get concessions on petrol should be the ones who have no choice but to use their own cars - like the disabled, or their carers. Why should people who have to travel a certain distance get a concession? Presumably they are getting paid well for the job, or why do they take on the travelling?

The waiting lists wouldn't be so long if the government had put a resectable amount of money into the national health service in the first place. They are sitting on the cash so that they can inject it into public services just before the election. Patronising or what?

And how do you know that the blood (there is always a shortage of blood) & pharmaceuticals are running out?....because the media have told us so?......and who has given the statements to the press?.....the government of course!

Get a grip, have you never heard of he propaganda machine.

They have been trying another way, this is the last resort, and I will support it for as long as I am allowed to by the people who CONTROL <rotflol> this (once proud) country of ours.

j9j9 you're saying that the government should have put more money in to the NHS at the same time as saying that they should cut taxes. That kinda reeks of hypocrisy. When will all the braindead people out there start to realise that its all 1 pot - 2p off fuel is £1 billion less for the government. Where do they want that billion pounds to come from? - schools? hospitals? police? WHERE???
If they don't cut spending they've just got to put taxes up somewhere else (which would make no difference overall) or loan the difference (which would totally fuck up the economy and increase taxes in the long run to pay the interest). As much as i hate paying high fuel prices I am totally against these stupid childish protests which are totally fucking up the country. How much do you think the protests are costing the government and businesses? And who foots the bill for that? The taxpayer of course, so these brainless assholes are more likely to cause an increase in tax than a decrease.
These protests will also soon start to cost lives if they carry on. Getting fuel to ambulances just isnt enough- if they cant get staff then theyre pretty fucking useless - and also patients can't get to hospitals - eg there's a person who lives near me who's got prostate cancer and has to go to coventry (about 50 miles away) every day for kemotherepy (not sure how to spell that!) and he's starting to panic - he's only got enough to last for about 2 more days and I live in quite a rural area with hardly any buses.
I think that the longer this carries on for the more public opinion will sway away from the protestors.

Ed

PS - Somebody said something about the dome, most of the money for that actually came from sponsership and the lottery and it would actually cost the taxpayer more to close it (because of the unemployment pay and lost tax revenue from the staff, amongst other things).

They've already got the money ed, it's in the coffers, ready to dish out just before an election, like I said, so we all think "oh, aren't the labour party wonderful, look what they've done for us, let's vote for them again".

Tell me, ed, what have they done with all the money they've been raking in with the rediculous amount of tax on petrol? becaue I haven't noticed any increase to the nhs of education.

The friends of the school my kids go to have had to raise the money to buy computers for God's sake. Blair said that he'd make sure every child in the country has access to the internet.

Do you know what Blair's contribution to that was?..... he wasted our money by making sure that each child had a copy of an ISP CD for a service their parents would have to pay for, complete with a glossy brochure! I suppose that was just in case the child (or their parents) couldn't afford the petrol to get to the shops & pick up one of the many free ones from many of the stores in town. duh!

A friend of mine has just had to wait 2 years for a knee operation! His knee was so bad last year that he couldn't drive anymore, so he had to give up his company because he couldn't get to his customers.

Tell your next door neighbour all he has to do is contact his local Police, who (as far as I understand) will make sure that he gets the fuel he needs to get to his chemotherapy.

and on your millennium dome point - that just shows what a stupid idea that was in the first place doesn't it? I wonder who's decision it was to spend all that money on a tent, only to make it redundant a year later! Plenty of forsight went into that didn't it? NOT. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif">

I bet if you held a poll on where that lottery money should have gone, the vast majority of the sensible UK populace would vote for the NHS, education, the emergency services & better public transport so that we wouldn't have to spend so much of our hard earned dosh on petrol.

I could go on and answer more of your questions, but I shan't waste any more of my time, I've got some important sleeping to do.

J9

PS it's borrow the difference, not loan the difference, as you wrote.

PPS 'scuse the ranting, regulars.

Yeah, J9! You go girlfriend! Why are people so easily sucked into propaganda?

Anyway, do you reckon that the government put way too much into defence? Its just a thought. Personally I think that the government splashes out too much money trying to keep this so called 'great' britain soveriegn.

Why don't we just send Queeny to live in the dome for a couple of weeks of the year then loads of stupid tourists will be prepared to pay heaps of money to go and have a look around!

Derby> So Citizen Smith from Tooting Common supports the Rams? Cool.

Thanks Gwai

But, did you know that Blair wants to scrap the monarchy too & be the President?

He's made a very clever move over the last couple of days, I wouldn't mind betting that he asked the petrol companies to irationally raise the price of petrol, so he can publicly go in and ask them why they did it & demand that they drop the increase. They of course, as planned, will comply and with great publicity & media coverage Blair will then announce that he has managed to get the fuel prices down (back to what they were when the protests began!

Everyone of course will then say "What a great guy Blair is". How stupid do they think we are?

On another note, I think that the dome should become a virtual reality theme park and I think they could raise a lot more money from tourism if they change Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle & Balmoral into historical theme parks. What do you think?

Well if the monarchy is scrapped, J9 I don't think Blair will have much chance of becoming the president with the public contempt he's stirred up lately.

Anyway, J9, email me melissa@atlast.co.uk because I want to let you in on some more WebRewards tips that I am not allowed to post on the boards.

Love GwaiMui.

Can anyone actually tell me what Tony "the hype" Blair has actually done with the billions £££'s he has raised by indirest taxation. Supposedly we are led to believe on the NHS, schools and the police, eh??

Re the NHS
I had to wait 10 months to see an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Derby.

I had to wait 6 months for an MRI scan

I had to wait another 6 months for an operation.

I now have to wait 30 weeks for an appoitment at the pain clinic.

I now have to have another MRI scan, another 6 month wait??

Re schools,
My eldest daughter is in a class size of 30+. She has to have 3 seperate teachers during the week, as her school is unable to effectively staff the school, supply teachers, etc.
The computer her class uses is an old acorn I donated when I upgraded to pc.

Re the police,
Can't remember the last time I saw a bobby on the beat.

Of course j9j9 is right!!! reserves are in the labour party coffers (sorry the treasury) waiting to be spent on spinning us bulls**t that they are doing a wonderful job to try and secure an extra term in office.

Re ed.h comments that "2p off fuel is £1 billion less for the government."
Can any one tell why a labour, therefore socialist government is allowing the higher rate of income tax only to be 40pence in the £??

Can anyone tell me how much extra revenue would be raised by putting the higher rate earners tax up to say 50 pence in the pound??

Surely this would generate more money than his policy of punishing everyone by the ridiculously high rate of duty on petrol.

i saw enough pigs 2 day to last me alife time, god knows where they learnt to direct traffic but they were pretty shite at it, and as 4 it being an orderly flow in 2 the petrol station, they let 4 cars in at a time and then wait 4 em all 2 finish 2 let the next lot in, i thought they were bloody stupid up north but they certaintly beat em down here!
(sorry, i have a personal hatred 4 pigs due to a car crash i was in)

I have to say that I'm sorry about what I assumed, Tony Blair is more grasping than I thought. I honestly had no idea that he was as right-wing as William Hague or that he fucked up the NHS so bad.
I was on his side cos me mum voted Labour and because I honestly thought that Labour represented equality. Now I know how wrong I was and I'm willing to admit it. I used to support Labour, but now I don't know who to support. Certainly not William Hague!

I heard something disturbing today, I don't know how true it is, but apparently Blair has proposed that tanker drivers are now part of the "essential services" along with the Police, Ambulance drivers, Fire Service etc

'Aint that nice of him.

I wonder if he'll manage to push that through before the 60 days are up?

Course you know what that means..... it means that it has become illegal for them to not carry out their work... they are not allowed to refuse to go through blockades & they are not allowed to strike.

Cunning.
