Truancy

Jail worked, claim teenagers

I was listening to the two girls being interviewd on the Today programme this morning. Both backed the decision to imprison their mother (although they questioned the length of the sentence) becuase it woke them up to their failings. They added that they are both now attending school and do not plan to play "hooky" again.

Notice the Lib Dem spokesman's comments. He seems to have missed the fact that the action worked. No-one denied that the family had problems, which is why the Social Service visited 71 times in 12 months, but at some point dire measures are needed.

Truants return to school

Judging by the article above [widely reported elsewhere too], other truants have realised that their actions have dire consequences. Apaprently persuaded by parents fearful of imprisonment...

Still, jailing a parent will never work, will it?

Lets wait to see the long-run effects I think, a policy cannot be called successful after about 2 weeks of implementation......

The policy has been in place for a while, this was just the first trial and conviction.

Naturally the state departments make every effort before they take this drastic step...hence there will be few court cases.

The second link took me to an article on BritPop. Was this an attempt to link Truancy to teens staying home to listen to music? <IMG SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

    Times truancy story now here

    Guardian interview

If it works, let's do it. But Toadborg is right: long term solutions are called for, and this needs to be followed-up.

No -one said that jailing parents would be an ideal solution, and it isn't.
How-ever, for the time being it may be an effective deterent.

After all, prison is not the solution to crime, but we still administer its use to criminals.
