Songs that are better as a cover

Why not.

I can only think of two right now, but Blue Monday is much better done by Orgy, its hardly the same song really. And I just head a "punkish" for lack of a better word, version of Ice Ice Baby. Excelent. And also the same type version of back that ass up and gin and juice and they all rock.

I like the cover of 'tainted love' that marilyn manson did!

Some would say the new remixes of "Thunder In My Heart" (Leo Sayer originally in 1977) are better, but as I haven't heard the original, I can't comment there. (my_name, I don't know if this is out in the USA, but it's currently number one in the UK)

Generally, cover versions are nowhere near as good as the previous incarnations. Nothing comes to mind immediately...

The original is okay, it's just slower and not as funky! Prefer the cover.

Nothing compares to you is better by sinaed o'connor than by Prince. Infact the Stereophonics did it for a warchild album and that was actaully better than both.

Sinead O'Connor... ah yes, I remember a few years ago, Push, a trance DJ, remixed "The Phoenix of My Flame"... that was a pretty good cover.

Credence Clearwater Revival - I Put a Spell On You (love Nina Simone on this too)
Me First & the Gimme Gimmes - Wild World, Walk Like an Egyptian, The Longest Time
Johnny Cash - One, The Beast in Me, Hurt
    Jeff Buckley - Lilac Wine
Radiohead - Nobody Does it Better

Er, can't think of anymore at the moment.

I should go back to the other thread for this, but today on VH1 we saw Celine Dion (yes, she of Titanic fame) covering You Shook Me All Night Long originally by AC/DC. Surely a sign of the apocalypse.

Leann Rimes (spelling??) version of "How Do I Live Without You" is better than the original in the Conair soundtrack.

I love his "Sweet Dreams" one, much better than original I think.

On 'sweet dreams', I like the version by Shiny Grey - Why. And also the Angello+Ingrosso remix of the original :D

I love all the covers he did, although I wasnt as keen on his version of personal jesus as the original.
I love the album of covers that Placebo did on their special edition of sleeping with ghosts. Not sure i prefer them to originals, but i still love them.

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Or KD Lang. Leonard Cohen version isn't bad though but the other two have so much more feeling and emotion in them.

Babyshambles version of "white riot" on the zane lowe show was awesome, the mike was turned down a bit low but still it was 2 minutes of classic punk. The pogues version of "dirty old town" was brilliant and I preferred the sid vicious version of "I did it my way."

    Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
If You See Her, Say Hello - Jeff Buckley
Drown in my own tears - Jeff Buckley
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
    Gloria - Patti Smith
Where Did You Sleep Last Night? - Nirvana
    Love Machine - Arctic Monkeys

N.B - I once saw Stephen Malkmus cover "Heart of Glass" by BLondie and "Yellow" by Coldplay in the same medley. Also, wanky remixes shouldn't count as covers either.

All The Things She Said - Cinerama
    Independant Women - Elbow
Take Your Mama - Shayne Ward

I definitely disagree with that one.
I disagree too, I think Maiden did a bloody good job of it in the first place.

I prefer Foo Fighters cover of 'Have A Cigar' to the original by Pink Floyd (well, the version I have of it which I think is the Foos)

Another one that came to mind was either Queens Of The Stone Age's version of 'Never Say Never' by Romeo Void.

Jimi Hendrix - Wild Thing, Day Tripper & Sgt Pepper's.
    Eric Clapton - Cocaine
Joe Bonamassa - Had to Cry Today
Eric Johnson - Are You Experienced?
Gov't Mule - Simple Man, What is Hip?, Helter Skelter, pretty much every cover they've ever done........

It's not the one that's on the Mission Impossible II soundtrack, sounds better than that one.
