BP boss salary

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Looking at the headlines yesterday, The Mirror seemed to be making an awful fuss over Lord Browne's salary. Bear in mind that many footballers and other celebs earn more, why should we be complaining? BP is one of Britain's great exporters, with a worldwide reputation and it has contributed billions in tax to the public purse. We shouldn't be critisizing the man, we should be congratulating him on his success.

He is a damn scumbag for accepting such a ludicrous salary, to compare him to the salaries of other celebrity tossers just shows the filth in our society.

No-one deserves or NEEDS that much money, and it is no use calling BP a greta business becuse the paying of such huge salaries is very bad business practise which is often derided by the city.

It ought to be damn well illegal!

I personally don't mind people being paid a lot, although they obviously should do something to EARN that much.
The fact that BP is reporting losses in profits makes me think that giving the workers a payrise is not the best of ideas.

If someone offered YOU that much cash, would you turn it down?

I don't care how much he earns, it is between him and the shareholders and I'm sure that they will hold him to account if they don't see any profits...

As for it being made illegal, why should that be so? Are we suggesting wage caps for all jobs, if so how much is a window cleaner worth, or a dustman, or a nurse...surely the only thing a Govt should be concerned with is to make sure that no-one earns too little...hence the minimum wage.

I would hope that I would turn down that much money OR except it and use it for charity or invest it in a development fund etc...

Of course I am not suggesting that every job has a wage cap, where did you get that idea from?

I am saying that the work he does nowhere near justifies the salary. The government should encourage businesses to be competitive and this money could certainly be better spent by BP.....

You mentioned this being made illegal...

Anyway, this is an issue between him and the BP shareholders. Private company, none of our business how much they pay the boss. I'm sure that BO could spend their money better, but it's THEIR decision, not the Govts...

But it is the govts job to encourage good business practise which this is not......

Says you. And I suspect that you have masses of experience....?

The point is that the Govt can make suggestions but it is a private company's business what they do with the money they make..(or don't as the case may be)...

I cannot see how it could be any other way...

    What are you talking about?

The government "interferes" with businesses all the time, the minimum wage, safety regulations, packaging guidelines, corporate taxes and thousands of other rules and regulations to monitor business.

That is the nature of our mixed economic system!

    Whats that supposed to mean?

Now, now gentlemen, we don't need a slanging match here.

Getting us back on subject, personally if I was responsible for the success of such a large company I would feel entitled to some benifit. And if I was offered a million pound salary I would take it. However, I would probably give a fair amount to charity after I had bought my expensive car and house and holiday...

The list you give is completely different and you know it. Taxes and workers rights are completely different from restricting peoples wages...

Would you object if they paid their top saleman that amount, or thier best engineer or the cleaner...?

It wasn't an insult, although I'll admit that's how it cam across...You said that BP paying the boss so much was 'bad business practise'. I was suggesting that was you opinion and that to make such a statement you need to back it up, with experience or something to support it.

I have always suggested that people should be paid what their boss thinks they are worth...in this case BP think that he is worth this amount of cash. If he makes them a pile then they will be proved right...

If you think this is offensive look at the CEO of an blue chip US company...
