Hey guys,
Due to some interesting circumstances at work, I've been recently promoted. (Okay, it wasn't really merit-based, my boss was fired )
With my new job, which I am completely unqualified to do, I get my choice of a new laptop. I already have a PC laptop, so I was thinking of getting a Mac iBook. Does anyone have one or have a friend that has one? Or should I just get a new PC?
I have to tell them by tomorrow...

In the end, it depends what your personal preference is, and you're used too.
Macs are said to be better for graphics and music, and so on. Whereas PCs are more general.
Up to you.
Congrats on the promotion

I-macs are too expensive and only good for graphics and audio/video editing...
Most busineses's use Microsoft O/Ss with either MS or sometimes Linux servers. Also MS has better support than a MAC..
MS machines are also easier to network, Appletalk is a pain in the arse!
Not that my Microsoft certification loyalty is swaying me to give opinion!
Wow, you're a poet and you didn't even know that you were one.
As much as I love macs (especially the pretty iMacs they have at my uni, which I'd steal if they weren't chained to the desk), I have to agree with the incompatibility. I find myself e-mailing essays to myself constantly so that I can print them when I get home. Unless everyone else you work with has a Mac, I'd strongly recommend a PC.
Based on what you guys have said I'm leaning toward the PC, but I already have 2 PC's! That's the main reason I was considering the iBook.
They aren't letting me spend the kind of money it would cost to get a better PC than what I already have.
Justin (or anyone), you're a computer guy, are they (Macs) that much better than PC's for multimedia? I have a tricked out PC already, would the iBook necessarily be any better?
I've used Macs for the best part of a my life, I have a Rev C 333Mhz iMac at home. However, when my kind mother offered to by me a computer, I went for a PC. Why? Because it's cheaper, no other reason.
Kentish mentioned user friendliness. Macs are unrivalled, and I say that having used both extensively. On the surface, both are essentially identical. However, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, like optimising your system or fiddling around with system files, I've always found Macs are far simpler to use. You don't end up wondering what happens if you delete Win5xtps.dat, whilst on a Mac you know that deleting the file marked "Finder" will well and truly fuck you up.
There's the obvious funky looks, although I personally prefer a Ti PowerBook over an iBook. Granted, the iBooks look good, but I prefer the sleekness of the Ti. Not to mention the wonderful screen.
There's also another aspect I've been seriously worrying recently, which is Micr$ofts .NET thing. The idea of having to connect to MS servers to get anything done...well, let's just say I've had enough trouble with dumb terminals in my life, I don't want any more. Which is why Macs are wonderful >> you'll get to retain control of your machine for forseeable future.
My recommendation? Get an iBook (or a Ti if you can con your company), especially if you've already got a couple of PCs. Not only is it useful knowing how to use the "other" platform, but there are many features on a Mac you simply can't get (or can't get as good) on a PC. MS has started a trend of released Mac updates before PC. There is a new generation of games coming out on the Mac that make use of its superior graphics (if you're interested), iTunes and the iPod are superior than just about anything for music. I'd seriously recommend getting one. I know my next laptop is going to be a Mac. Regardless of price, in my opinion it's most defintely worth it.
