Yeah Oregon is a pretty Liberal place, I can't remember the last time our state voted republican. But we do have our nuts (as I suppose every place does), they've even got their own website and had a 'demonstration' up in Washington like three weeks ago.

if you find yourself anywhere near Virginia, you should spend at least a day on the Appalachian Trail in the Shenandoah Valley. It's totaly worth it.

Yes there will be Islamists involved in the Stop the War Coalition and maybe some do hold homophobic views... But the Stop the War movements comprise of people from all different backgrounds the one I attended yesterday (and hence was late for the meet) was run by student unions and was looking to form an umbrella organisation that could cover all universities in the country... Think People and the Planet on an anti-war theme.

Actually in my experience it isn't just hardcore Islamists in the movement, there are academics, human rights people, socialists, environmentalists, anarchists, liberals, young people, old people, anti-fascists ect
And if hopelessly undermining themselves by hypocritically embracing extreme right wing religious nuts wasn’t enough the ‘anti-war movement’ made George Galloway their poster kid; with their Vice-President being Galloway I can’t really take the Stop the War Coalition particularly seriously.

But it is just that.. An anti-war movement. Yes, people ill not agree on many grounds but what we do agree is that the war should end and that we shouldn't attack Iran. Whatever you do there will be people who you will perceive as 'amoral' involved some how... And by the way, none of us support terrorism.

As for Galloway, after appearing on Big Brother I've lost what respect I had for him (no pun intended). Sad really because is party I think has some really good ideas... I think he shouldn't be vice-president, but it will now stop myself or thousands of others exercising our freedom of speech. No organisation is perfect at the end of the day.

Not my scene sorry. I have more than enough issues with the way the war was prosecuted, but the anti-war crowd strike me as reactionary and all too willing to play into the hands of other agendas.

People have to stop judging groups of people by a small minority of them that might not even exist. I'm attending the demo because i'm against war just like most people who'll be there.

Is that why your username profile on thesite asserts that you 'don't like chavs'?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
yeah it is. a chav is the name for the bad minority of a group of people.

Bad minority? So do you think that anybody that fits the description of a ‘chav’ is a bad person?

common now man, that's not what he meant and you know it.

Probably not, I'm not really being fair and I'm taking it from somewhere else.

However for someone to say 'I don't like chavs' - a pretty blanket statement and then preach that 'people have to stop judging groups of people by a small minority' they're being inconsistent imo.

Yes i do. My description of a chav is somebody who goes around with a group of mates looking for a fight. I've had violent experiences with chavs, including two friends of mine who had their throats slit. They were 15.

Anybody who behaves like a chav i believe is a bad person, wouldn't you agree?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I think anyone who is a murderer is a bad person, or anyone who believes violence is a way of dealing with the problems in their lives is heading down a path that isn't going anywhere good.

But to be honest, stereotyping huge numbers of people by the actions of the few isn't the most positive perspective when trying to build a political and social coalition to change government policy.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I wasn't stereotyping...at the end of the day a chav is the name given to somebody who DOES act like this.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
No mate, chav is used to describe some people who behave in a certain way, and tens of thousands more that simply wear a hoodie or stand on street corners, or just ain't liked by the press - or even in some people's eyes just to describe young people. That's the problem with any term like chav, it's essentially subjective.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    I disagree.

This goes back to what i was saying about people judging groups of people by a small minority of them. It's not right that younger people should be judged by a small minority of people amongst them that cause trouble.

The word "chav" came about as a name to describe this small minority of bad people.

Isn't 'chav' an acronym for "Council House and Violent"?

I knew some sound chavs back home... I think the problem with a lot of them is that they're hard up. often you find the nasty ones are usually ones that don't live a happy life and have a lot of emotional challenges. In my experience at least.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
The etymology is uncertain, but it could from "chavi", a Romany term for child. Its definitely not "Council House and Violent"
