why are models so skinny?

i'd like to know why models are so skinny? i thought in general women look better with curves? what is so desirable about being so thin?

    It's because they're effectively a clothes horse/hanger, designers like to dress the tallest and skinniest because the clothes they design hang (and supposedly look) better that way. I actually think models like Heidi Klum, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer etc etc have fantastic bodies - but they aren't exclusively "runway". The models who work solely on the runway are the skinniest, most gaunt-looking, praying-mantis-type models around imo.

    Of course, they could just design clothes for shorter, less-slender people, but since that's not the way the fashion world generally works... ;)

    its just that some have such boy-ish bodies, straight up and down. the runway models look soooo unhealthy, it can't be healthy to be that thin can it? they look about 6ft tall and 6 stone

    probably mainly to do with eating disorders or drug use. Im sure some are naturally tall and thin, but its exaggerated because theyre under pressure not to eat much.

    Just fashion change with time....

    models used to be rounder...

    coke is not one of the reason, it cos that want agency wants, but coke
    is most certianly use by them to lose weight and deal with the pressure.

    To get slim there is of course ED for those that are too lazy
    to go do some sport...

    And they use special coke as well, got less calories in it, as seen here

    nice understanding of the psychology of eating disorders, and ignoring the fact that a lot (not all) people with EDs are obsessed with exercise too. it just makes it worse - not better.

    It might make it worste for some, but it does help and even save others...

    And I am sorry, but some people who has ED does do it because it is more
    easy than going to the gym and do some sport to lose extra calories or
    go on a diet.

    Not all of them I agree, my statement was a bit general, but saying it make it
    worste is the same, it is no true in all cases...

    you think that starving yourself or making yourself throw up is easier than going to the gym??????? :eek2:

    eating disorders have a lot more to it than just wanting to lose weight, there are all sorts of other mental and emotional things going on

    Because most designer make their clothes as size 6's or 8's and put the pressure on the models to fit into the clothes. God knows why they prefer the skeleton look. Maybe they think their clothes hang better on human coat hangers.

    The size of the model is just a trend, it will change again, but at the moment as we get fatter the models will stay thin, they are supposed to be something not quite obtainable, something stunning and above the rest of us.

    As for their uniformity, it has to be that way, as others have mentioned they are clothes horses, to run a show where the models are different sizes would cost a fortune.

    well they often make quite skimpy clothes, don't they. ones that'd probably look better on a skinny person than a fat/ter person.

    if they sent a gorgeous, curvy girlie down the runway, everyone would think 'wow, she's really hot'.

    if they send skinny, uniform, androgynous girls down, everyone thinks 'wow, look at those nice clothes'.

    They do. Skinny or not, I see very few runway models that even look attractive in the face. I can't even explain it, but just their faces are hideous. Dead looking. Just ugly really. And I will never understand why they do such the bizzare rotten looking eye makeup.

    Spot on...and I also like to use them.

    I think real skinny girls are a turn off and it has to be something to do with an eating disorder. You can't look in the mirror and think you look good without having some sort of problem.

    Personally i don't understand why being a waife is a pre-requisite for being a model - there's nothing attractive about it. Clothes imho look far better on curvier women anyway by highlighting and complimenting the female frame.

    When it comes to runway models and such, I dont understand the "fashion" at all. They are always just these hideous things that don't even resemble an outfit.
