Is there any hope for the Tories?

Do the Tories really have any chance of ever winning another election? Or are they doomed to become an "also-ran" third party, behind a right-leaning centrist New "Labour" and the increasingly lefty Liberal Democrats?

The average age of their membership is in the 60s (62 I think); they're clearly not able to appeal to the new generation as they are forced further and further to the extreme right, both by a centrist drifting Labour party and internal extremists. Can they ever become popular again?

I think (and hope) not, although am distressed by the increasingly right heading direction of the Labour party.

I think you will find the extreme right receiving a lot of support in the near future. Maybe thats when the tories will make their comeback.

At the moment they are total shit. They are identical to the labour party and the only difference is that labour are in power.

British politics is a stagnant pool of diarrhoea at the moment. Id like to kill off the whole lot of them and start over.

What makes you think there'll be an upsurge in far-right feeling?

    Just a feeling..

Not because people actually are moving more to the right but because of massive disillusionment, disgust and frustration at the current government and their lapdogs in 3rd. Blair will probably just move his party more to the right in order to keep votes, hes shown how willing he is to drop principles for power.

Our entire society is moving right...We are very close to a police state. EU arrest warrents, anti-terrorism legislation, ID cards, ID chips, Civilian police additions, always increasing security.

I agree that you will see an unsurge in support for the tories, but only if they show themselves as a true alternative.

What we have now is ineffective opposition, just like we had under Thatcher between 1983 and the election of John Smith as Labour leader - building on Kinnocks changes, Smith made labour electable and Blair has just run with this changes.

What you will see is, the longer Labour are in power, the greater support you will get for an alternative. Usually it is the youth who provide the biggest number of activists and anti-govt campaigners. The reason that many of the under 40s support Labour now is because they grew up with conservatism...

Its almost the exact opposite of what happened under Thatcher. Back then, Labour were full of far left-wing members and were thus unelectable. Now we have the tories quite far to the right, also unelectable. hopefully a new generation of members will come along to redress the balance.
