reminded me of a line from a song there ...
    'i'm close to heaven
    crushed at the gate
    you sharpen your knives
    on my mistakes'.

Baptism and christening isn't child abuse.

Rolly, you're right that christening is a made up religious ceremony with no biblical precendent but come now, it's no more harmful than being brought up with certain beliefs.

why do you get a new name when you get christened?!

i've been christened, holy communion-ed and done my confirmation. i got a new name for doing that one. but to be honest none of it means anything to me 'cause i'm not a practicing whatever i am.

You don't, as far as I am aware. I never got one when I was christened.

You get a confirmation name when are confirmed (believe it or not) in the Catholic church.

This thread has blown the whole thing out of proportion.

I had to make a promotional video for baptism last year. I understood that when a baby gets baptised, its parents are acknowleding the religious path they are going to raise the child with and that the named godparents have the responsibility to guide the babe through their lives adhering to the religion. I was christened when I was eleven, kicking and screaming I might add as I've never had that particular psychosis *ducks*. My Grandad did it to me, oh joy, in the Bahamas- which has the dealth penalty so as already discussed in another thread is hardly a civilised country. And... To top it all off- the dress was revolting. Anyway, I was given an extra middle name during the ceremony, my dead grandmother's, and although it's not on my birth certificate I've used it ever since- bank statements, bills etc. I may even be in my passport but I'd have to check that one.

babtism is what someone chooses based on knowledge and desire.

to do that they cannot be babies.

jesus wasn't baptised till he was thirty.

imagine if no irish people had ever been baptized ...they'd have no enemey.
see where the abuse comes in?

turlough didn't get to chooses what he should believe and defend and take sides with.

no christening would mean no 'OTHER' side to lob peytrol bombs at.

If you read Dante's Inferno, there are, according to Mr. Aligheri, there are a few popes in the pits of hell. One of the main reasons he got in so much trouble with the Florentine authorities.
