i think what is meant by the universe is expanding is that its not litterally expanding, its just expanding in the sense of the knowledge we have of it, ie once upon a time people thought that the earthe was all there was, then the universe 'expanded' when they discovered other planets eg mars etc!!!

Nope, the universe is actually expanding in the literal sense.

It's the big bang theory innit?

Everything comes together then bang...everything flies out all different directions. Apparently it's still happening, no one knows for sure but when people are talking about the universe "expanding" they mean expanding, not what's being discovered.

Yes it has happened but it's still continually expanding from the initial bang, some scientests say that in a few billion years all the mass in the universe will stop expanding, come back together into one big ball and explode again. We'll never know I suppose.

The phrase is "Ignorance is bliss" -a bunch of crap if you ask me.

Look, outside the universe is simply NOTHING. If you don't think that's so, think about this: You accept the big bang theory as very possible if not true, right? The theory says that the universe (as Turlough said) used to be "one big ball". But if the whole universe was that, then what was around it? Nothing.

We know the Universe is expanding because of Red Shift
