Banks

Don't you just love 'em? I need to change my savings account to one that makes it so that I can't take money out without there being a stupidly large penalty, and without me having to have lots in it to open it. But the man at Barclays said I couldn't. Problem with this: if my account stays as it is, I am likely to keep taking money out of it (£3000 I've taken out in the last year, stupid girl that I am), and I don't really want to do that.

So I am going to try to open a savings account with a different bank and have all the money I want to save transferred into that one each month. Even if they can't do what I wanted, I would be less likely to go into a bank that didn't have my main account with it, and transfers would take ages anyways. So I would like to know the following:

Which bank is good for customer service and helpfulness?
Which bank is good for savings accounts?
Which bank is good for staying the fuck away from?

Thank you for your help kiddies :).

So actually what you're saying is that you can't trust yourself to leave the money in your account?

How about getting a postal account, and then burn the withdrawal book. National Savings does them - you could even get an ISA at your age.

Yeh, that. I thought I could, but apparently I can't. I am annoyingly a complete spendaholic. And I spend money on stupid things like food and CD's.

How much do you need to put in to open an ISA?

10 quid minimum and you can add up to 3 grand per year.

    Looksee

If you need to leave your money alone, get a 30 or 60-day notice period, this should stop you withdrawing money as you can't get it instantly.

Ooooh I like the look of that one :D.

freeallangels - the bank won't let me change my account at all, which is why I want a new one.

Get an ISA, you are old enough to get one.

That was what I was telling you to do- the "account" we have is an ISA, and we set a really high withdrawal penalty to stop us spending the wonga.

I have an ING Direct savings account which has a pretty good rate of interest but it's quite easy to transfer the money between accounts online, so probably too tempting for you...

    Worth a look

You so didn't. You told me the withdrawal penalty bit, but not the ISA bit. So poo at you.

We're not married, so we shouldn't bicker.

Now be a good little girl and realise that I am, in fact, right.

    Barclays have the best adverts.
    Halifax have the worst.

And HSBC have the longest queues.
