the weathermen are predicting a seriously cold and harsh winter and the country may have to go on a three day week cos we have no gas reserves!

do the people who run things never look beyond the end of the week?
we never seem to be prepared for anything.

What in the world is a 3-day week? I doubt you're going to change the way we read the calendar, so it must be something else.

We don't have any electricity upstairs, the fuse has just blown - does that count?

and does anyone know how to change a fuse?
Flick the switch to OFF and find the one that's blown. Some fuseboxes just have a bit of loose wire as the fuse, others have the ready made fuses you find in plugs. Replace with the same type.

Sounds like the fusebox has tripped rather than blown then.

my mum's house however - there's like a trillian bits to pull out and then a wire to wrap around and pull through various bits - it can wait until tomorrow :p (assuming the shower works!)

our fuse box is the same. from the 50s, i reckon. pain in the arse. in theory it's simple - you just have to have the fuse wire touching and secured by the two screws. not so easy when you've blown the lights though....

i don't think those types of fuseboxes can trip. they just blow. but it can wait :)

Try telling that to an 80-year old woman or a 3month old baby.

I already work a three day week. I'm here for 6 days a week but generally only work for half of that. And half of that is buggering about. So really only a day and half week. :p

She's got a circuit breaker in her house, not a fuse box.

On those you just flkick the switch back up and everything starts again.

I hope it wont be that bad... I'm spending my first Christmas EVER in the UK this year... a heatingless Christmas in Kew is not my idea of fun, it was bloody cold last month when I was over, never mind in December...

Ohh, and Hi by the way ;)

That's the word I was searching for: circuit breaker.
