contact lenses

If you wear contact lenses, how long do you usually keep them in? & How long are you supposed to keep them in?

Recently I lost my glasses in a club and they turned up all bent and broken so I threw them away, but I never bothered to get them replaced. But now i'm wearing contacts from 9am till whenever I drop asleep and sometimes my eyes sting when I remove them.

Just curious :)

yeah you're supposed to take them out before you go to bed or else they irritate your eyes

I do that, but sometimes I'll wear my lenses for 16->18hours without removing. and they'll sting a lil

i dont think you're meant to wear them for more than 12ish hours
try those ones you can sleep in?

If you wear contacts for long periods of time then your eyes will get tired. If you're up for 18 hours a day then you will be tired, and that isn't good for your eyes either.

I wear contacts that I can sleep in, and I wear them for about a week-10 days before I take them out for a day or two to give my eyes a rest. Perhaps you should try them too.

Instead of making another thread, I am wondering what sort of price it costs for monthly lenses? Am thinking of getting some after Christmas, but it depends on how much they are and the like.

I think your best bet is to get some replacement glasses.

I pay about £45 for three months supply of monthly disposable Day & Night lenses (the ones you can sleep in). That's from Tesco Opticians.

I pay £29.60 for 6 month's worth from the Specsavers website (mine are monthly disposables that you have to take out at night)

Your eyes start to hurt for the following reasons.

Unless your lenses are day/night ones, the other ones don't let the oxygen into your eyes as well. During the day this is fine because your eyes are open and receiving oxygen anyway but as you get tired and your eyes also start getting dryer, as your eyes don't open as much, there is less oxygen getting to your eyes, hence they sting.

I normally wear mine from 9am til when I go to bed and sometimes til like 4 if I go out and they never really hurt me but then again I've been wearing them for like 5 years. I would recommend every week or so reverting to glasses for a day if you have them and seriously recommend getting some glasses anyway.

i wear monthly ones which i take out every night but i find if i do go out my eyes get very dry and are uncomfortable so i also have eye drops which helps. i cant sleep in them as they go so dry i can even move them off my eye which is a bit scary!!

I had lenses like those but I found after 2 to 3 days they got cloudy and needed a cleaning

I suggest the original poster tries proclear lenses - they`re very good for reducing red eyes

Also you can buy glasses very cheaply off the net now from as low as 15 pounds delivered - made in the UK - I ordered a spare pair as I broke a pair on holiday and they came to 55 pounds because I wanted a different frame and thinner lenses without the extra thin lenses they`d only have come to 25 pounds

Wow, maybe I will order my glasses from the net:) It's amazing the markup you get at the high-street opticians.

When I get lenses I buy focus dailies in 3 month supply (90 lenses) boxes. I pay £60. But I've only been wearing lenses for a few years , I started with monthlies for a while but the contact lense specialist told me to try dailies so that I could wreck a few and not have to worry. I'm fairly happy to pay the premium as storing lenses and cleaning them becomes a major pain in the ass, and even now I break a lense now and again.

thanks for all the input. I guess before I was wearing my glasses in the morning and putting them in in the afternoon and wearing them till I sleep. I'm just paranoid about the pain i got and was just checking I wasn't damaging my eyes.

    ta :)

Oh, And i order my lenses from contactlenses.co.uk who are very reasonable price-wise and were extremely helpful when I accidentally ordered the wrong prescription, they sent a new batch before I had even returned the wrong ones, and went out of their way to get me seeing properly again /shameles plug

I wear monthlys that cost £10 a month. I wouldn't say you should keep them in for more than 12 hours. I try not, but then it can depend on what you're doing, sometimes things like reading can make my eyes hurt. To be honest though, i would say the pros outweigh the cons by so much, the worst i ever do is put them in the wrong eye or something like that.

I was wearing my contacts for those kind of hours and when I went to the opticians she said I had to stop asap - something to do with the veins in my eyes growing from the back to the front of the eyeball, trying to get some oxygen. It'll never get better, but I can prevent it further by wearing my glasses.

I get lenses for £8 a month from Specsavers. They're monthly ones.
