Anyone heard of this guy? The man who provided the ideological basis for C18, twice spending time in jail for political violence, and now a self-proclaimed muslim considered to be a "scholar" of Islam by many of its followers...

There are parallels between Islamism* and fascism, so its not that surprising.

    *note - Islamism, not Islam.

    How are you defining 'Islamism'?

Yep, even the BNP don't really oppose Islam as they make out, although i was meaning more the overall picture of the guy's life - highly bizarre.

What i find quite disturbing is the irrationality which underpins everything he 'believes' - despite the obviously formindable intellect he possesses. Absurd.

    Islamism

Nazi, fundamentalist Muslim, advocate of suicide bombs. He seems more like somebody’s caricature; an embodiment of just about everything society perceives as evil.

Although hopefully very bad things come his way, someone as odious as him really does deserve some kind of comeuppance.

I can use Wikipedia too. I was wondering what you meant by Islamism.

The term is a bit misleading because if it is not mainstream Islam, it shouldn't really be linked with that religion. If it is mainstream Islam, it should be called Islam.

I suppose you could draw a parallel with Christians who accept Church and State as separate and those who don't.

Yes, that's why made the distinction brainiac.

To be honest, I wouldn't trust Wikipedia to tell me the time.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Why? and what source would you trust?

But Islamism = Islam to the man on the street.

Yes, which is why I drew the distinction.

I know. I can read. I ask how you define Islamism precisely because it is used interchangably with Islam, and Muslim leaders are always brought in by the media to condemn atrocities carried out by 'Islamists'. If it isn't Islam, we should be clear about what it is. That's all.

Although it depends what you mean by "the man in the street".

Fair point. The general understanding of Islam is poor and the distinction between Islam the religion and Islamism the politics is not appreciated by the vast majority of the British public, I'd wager.
