medical report request?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Hi

On Thursday I got a letter from work requesting a medical report from my doctor. It says after recieving this report they will discuss with me whether continuing my employment is viable. It also says that if I refuse consent they will base info on whats on my personal file and it could lead to dismissal. I've got a couple of questions though. Has anyone else been through this and what was the outcome? Also what information will it contain?

I dont have any personal experience of it but a friend of mine was in the same situation a while ago and she refused to let them have her records. Her work arranged for her to see a company doctor though and said if she didnt agree to that then she'd get disciplined.

I imagine if you did agree to it then they'd just write to your doctor and ask for a statement or something about your current state of health.

I have had to have a medical report from my doctor regarding my blood pressure, it was very short and just said I was on medication to manage it and I shouldnt have any difficulty attending work on a regular basis. I was able to request to view the letter before it was sent to work though. If you are worried ask if this is an option.

I really don't want to snap at you because it's hard, but you are beginning to take the piss now.

Just how many times have you been told to take professional advice from employment law specialists now? Are you actually going to take the advice given to you for once, or not?

Based on experience they should give you an actual form for your GP to complete or with your permission they can send that form directly to your GP. You have the right to see the report before it is sent but you can waive that right if you wish.

They can ask for a report if they have reason to suspect you may be lying about an illness or the extent to which it can affect your work and attendance.

Reading some other replies it seems like this is an ongoing problem, so I'd suggest you call ACAS and find out where you stand.

My mum had to get a medical report before she took retirement for medical reasons. The people she worked for as a civil servant actually weren't looking to sack her, they were looking for ways to help her. She got a special chair and some other cool gadgets to help her work, as well as extra allowances if she needed the toilet or had to attend physio. Perhaps your employers are doing the same?

I've had to submit a medical report for my PGCE (post grad teaching degree) to see if i'm medically fit for work. I'm pretty healthy though so i have no problem doing that. It seems a bit harsh though that they threatened to sack you! Do you have a serious medical condition that will affect your work? if not whats to worry about?

Given her other posts about workplace harrassment and bullying, I expect that this isn't the case.
