Sex education and religion

Girl-From-MarsGirl-From-Mars Posts: 2,822 Boards Guru
i found out today why my friend julie is so clueless about sex, i couldnt understand how she could be so naive about some stuff. i knew all the facts about contraception from both school and teen mags.

its because she went to a catholic school (shes a methodist! <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/confused.gif"> ), and they dont teach sex education, not a single lesson!!! dont you think thats terrible? i know they dont approve of contraception, which is also crap. but you gotta teach people the basics, i just thought it was really disgusting she never got a single lesson on sex and reproduction or ANYTHING.

If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else.

omg that is really bad!

i thought it was the law that u had to teach it at some point, but obviously i was wrong.

i think all schools should teach it, no wonder the teen pragnancy rate is so high in dis country!

also just because ur religious doesn't mean u can't learn about sex. Jus coz u learn bout it dusent mean ur gonna go out and do it. And if u did, at least u wud know how to do it safely.

The more sand that escapes through the hourglass of time, the clearer we should be able to see through it.

The next government should sort the problem out because the current situation is terrible!

i don't suppose it's occurred to anyone that kids are just ignoring the 'education' part wether they recieve it or not and are just going straight on to sex?

I have a bit of an Irish background, so a lot of my family are Catholics. The last time I went to Ireland, the attitude was: let's pretend sex doesn't happen. I'm sure their teenage pregnancy rate is on the rise too. Teenagers are going to have sex. Rational people will persuade them to have SAFE sex. Less chance of disease and pregnancy if you use condoms, kids! Britain still has a very immature attitude to sex anyway; most kids can't talk to their parents about it.

I wonder if the people who make these decisions about the (lack of) sex education actually have any idea what they're doing. Things have changed since the days of free love and regular intakes of naivity and pot. The more adults ignore this problem, the more it will grow. The next generation are going to have major emotional problems. What an evil world this is.

Sex ed can only be a good thing, if taught the right way. Infact, experts say that sex ed should start age 5 (obviously not in detail, just how babies are made and why boys and girls have different parts etc) and that it should be an on-going thing, not just 5 1-hour lessons or something.

Maybe we need something more than sex ed...health ed.

I remember in aus, where skin cancer is a huge thing, we had to do projects and research about it, be taugh bout it n all...why not extend that idea? include sex ed, but make it an extra (compulsory up to o-level) subject...cover all sorts of health issue from STDs to spots n everything in between...fulfill what TheSite does. Make a majoy change in attitude towards sex n health in general in GB.

I've not lost my mind it's inserted elsewhere - hence the limp.

religion could be good, stops girls shagging anything bu then it can be stupid. I could never understand not knowing anything about SEX...everyone knows........they need to know something. it usually comes along with the periods talk right?

What did u say to her, did you tell her anything.

we have health ed at our school, we learned loads about STDs, although i cant even remember how you would tell the difference between chlamydia or gonhorroea (both bloody hard to try and spell though!!). but i know the basics about sex, how its done (julie worked that out), the fact that you can get pregnant by even one drop of sperm (scary fact: each time a bloke has an orgasm, he releases around 25 million sperm, and it just takes one.)... and i have enough common sense to realise the myths about doing it in the bath/standing up/during your period/etc etc are all just stupid lies. julie doesnt. i think a hell of a lot of this comes down to her lack of sex ed due to catholic schools. i really believe that every child should be taught about periods and sex and STDs and emotional stuff to do with relationships, with parents, friends, boyfriends/girlfriends etc. we had all of that. catholic schools dont. i dont really know much about the catholic church, i just think their attitude towards sex ed and contraception in general is total bollocks and unfair to the children of catholic parents or anyone unlucky enough to end up in a catholic school.

i think that by 14 its too late to start talking about sex in detail, well we had the periods talk, girls only mind, in year 7. the boys all got taken off to the sports rooms and had a good "manly chat" or some crap. we had health ed all together but the boys in our class were really immature and stupid about the whole thing (this started in about year 9 or 10). we had the emotional side of stuff all the way through the school until about year 11 i think. julie sadly only joined our school in year 10 so she missed out on a good deal of it.

as a result, shes had so many pregnancy scares its untrue, and repeatedly believes the lies her boyfriend churns out to save wearing a condom. the boys a rat, she just cant see it but thats a whoooole other post.

kat if you mean did i say anything to her, then yeah, when we talk about stuff, i did answer her questions, with the help of a very frank talking friend of ours! but when we both started seeing our boyfriends we talked a lot about it, and she wanted me to reassure her things were normal and stuff like that. she is quite naive, well she was, not knowing stuff like what a dildo was and being really clueless about what an orgasm involved, and stuff like that. at least she knows some more stuff like that now! and finally, 18 months after first going out with her boyfriend, she's agreed to go on the pill.

EVERYONE should know details about safe sex, whether or not they choose to do it at the age of 14, 18 or when they marry or never at all. its like any kinid of education, people still need to know about stuff we learn in school, whether or not you use your knowledge or not. and this is so much more important, as it could alter the course of your life. somethign needs to be done to address this problem of sex education, or the lack of it, and it must be given to everyone in the country, regardless of religion.

what would a parent prefer, their daughter learnign about how to use condoms properly and othe contraception methods, and what this will achieve.. or to come home pregnant, facing the difficult choices of adoption, abortion or raising a child, sometimes before they're even left schools themselves??

and yeah, some adults seem to think teenagers dont even HAVE sex, my friend julie's mum honestly believes her and her boyfriend havent had sex, even though they were engaged and they're always staying in each others houses (due to distance) and have been together a long time. this just shows how another generation ignores the problems and so this is why we keep getting a rise in STDs and teen pregnancy rates, no one seems bothered and just tries to ignore it!!

sorry that got a bit lenghty and heated...

If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else.

Well, you don't wanna know my opinions on religions and stuff... its not good.

Anyway, I think it is stupid, utterly mashed up that the sex ed system of here is virtually non existent. I learned my foreplay and "fun sex" skills from watchin hardcore pornos since 13 (probably why I'm so insane now) and my "Lets be careful/take precautions" attitude from leaflets and stuff I got myself, and my "True love making" skills from 2 years of love with my ex. (Aged 15-17).

My sex education:
Year 1 (aged 6) - none
Year 2 (aged 7) - none
Year 3 (aged 8) - none
Year 4 (aged 9) - Naked people on a beach playing badminton video. In depth, might as well be a SOFT german porno, you saw everything.
Year 5 (aged 10) - none
Year 6 (aged 11)- none
Year 7 (aged 12)- none
Year 8 (aged 13) - P.E. teacher answering questions for 30 mins. And the guys doing a questionnaire on girls and vice versa. Started watching porno's at friends houses.
Year 9 (aged 14) - I held a condom (With a hole) and diapram (with a hole) saw some IUD's, stick thingys, pills etc. No idea how to use them... had to figure that out.
Year 10 (aged 15) - Actual sex
Year 11 (aged 16) - Actual sex
College (aged 17) - Actual sex
College (aged 18) - none

Is that healthy sex education?

Its a good job (despite my dirtiness) that I am so mature about protection and stuff otherwise I'd have 230,000 kids by now!!!
(In 2-3years @9months each, with 2 partners??? Don't ask)

This country's education system needs sorting out.
