When were we a 'God fearing nation without crime'?

I think he has touched on something though - in the 'olden days' there was a sense of shame - you didn't want to caught up in crime because you didn't want to shame your family and your community (not articulating this very well). I don't think in reality fear is a good thing - but respect is. Low level crime such as shouting abuse - there used to be a day and age when you'd get pulled by your wrist to your parents who then gave you a smack. I know that's how I was brought up and it hasn't made me violent, it's just taught me respect. I think this crime, however horrible it is, is actually borne out of a lack of respect rather than malicious intent. They are just looking for the next laugh, and if that's smashing up childrens cemetarys then thats a failing in their head. I think in Britain today the family unit is weaker than it's ever been.

I tell you now, if I have children who ever do this they'll get a good hiding, and be better off for it.

But according to observers society in Britain has been falling into pits of depravity for about 500 years, either we have fallen far or we just like to moan on about how good things used to be and how bad they are now.

    There was no 'golden age'.

Jesus was scourged and crucified to save men's souls. Even today Opus Dei members scourge themselves as a penitence. Scourging has a long Christian tradition as a means of repentance, paying for ones sins.

And the relevance of this is? The only way I can read this is that you think that the internet drubbings you recieve is someway comparable to Christ's cruxifiction - which seems tasteless to me

Agreed, but there were better times when society had a moral, and largely Christian framework. Today due to an "anything goes" God-less society, encouraged by mamby-pamby socialism we've got a pit of filth masquerading as "society".

    Socialism? Where?

When where the better times exactly?

It doesn't mean he would approve of such punishment for others- does it?

If some fundamentalist lunatics want to do that to themselves, it's a free country of course. Luckily for all of us this is not a theocracy and religion does not dictate our judicial system.

Except of course that you cant 'pay' for your sins by scourging, by my understanding only Christ can give you that.

I think that this God-less society which you go on about is not the fault of socialism... this country at the very most is social democratic but even then this is a term I would use loosely.

If you want something to blame about how society is a "pit of filth" blame the development of consumerism and the fact that everything can be bought... Capitalism in action.

I suggested that yobs should lashed in town centres and that scourging was a tradition Christian way of showing repentence, and that Jesus was scourged on his way to the Cross. Lamp boy was trying to imply that scourging/lashing of yobs might not meet with Jesus' approval.
There was no reference to people having a go at me on here, and certainly no way I'd compare that in any way to Christ's cruxifiction. Nothing could comapre with Our Lord's suffering and death in order to save our souls.

Sure, many child brothels in victorian London...
But there are bad trends to combat and good things to aim for, and it's generally not Sunday schoolers and girl guides who create misery on their estates.

all i know is i grew up in the sixties and as a child your old man or the local coppers could and would give you a good clout ...
it would never have crossed my mind or my mates to even vandalise a telephone box for fear of being beaten and then grounded for three months ...with no telly or other entertainments in the bedroom.
no there has never been a golden age but ...there was a time when cctv wasn't needed in the streets ...on your house ...in the car parks or in the friggin cemetry.
remember when shop fronts didn't need steel shuttering at nights?
