What ALWAYS pisses me off about my college computers is their inability to make acceptions for the word "analysis". SO many times I've needed to search for this, and it gets filtered every time. Seriously, if we can't have anal what have we got left?

The way that most filtering software works is kinda all or nothing. Unless you get down to the nitty-gritty and "unfilter" specific websites. The webfiltering software we have at work and use in all our schools works with catagories. The provider of the software groups websites into catagories like Adult content, violence, games, sport, computing, etc....

Thus if we want to put a block on child-porn this is grouped under Adult content and therefore EVERY website under that catagory is blocked. Likewise because we don't want employees and pupils playing games online (not only because of the time factor but also eating up the bandwith) we have a block on the computing catagory. This unfortunately also blocks alot of the computing forums that we use for sourcing information on computing problems. But as said individual websites can be added to the inclusion group.

Filtering software is put in place not only to stop you from surfing nasty websites but also put in place to protect you from them.

    That concludes today's lesson.

    :)

On most school PCs any admin can unlock blocked websites, if it's important the librarian or teacher will do it. It just means you can't piss about.

At work I can't look at the football results if Arsenal were playing, and the BBC news page for Lincolnshire won't open either, for some unfathomable reason mostly do to with a major town in the region.

Forogtten Angel - Hotmail is filtered in our school as well, but only because of viruses and stuff - probably the same reason why it's filtered in your school.
