OK, OK.

I've just heard, on Sunday, my daughter who I've seen for all of ten minutes in the last three years, and my son who was really nasty to me at Christmas... are coming to visit me for the day!

I want to do something nice for them, but what??

Nothing too OTT either.

Any ideas?

I'm like a headless chicken.

Take them to the zoo...most kids love animals.

you're never too old for the zoo ;)

i went with my then two year old nephew last summer, and me and his mum had more fun that he did!

otherwise i second the bowling or cinema ideas.

The thing is this, right. The bowling and cinema ideas are good ones, but maybe for a later time. It's like, I haven't really seen them for ages especially my daughter, so I don't really want to be doing something really out of the ordinary with them... if you see what I mean. I think it might be better to take things easy... or am I wrong?

I thought of doing a BBQ, but the forecast says no.

    I dunno.

ask them what they want to do when they come over?

bbq sounded nice, because you would get the chance to talk to them, unlike at the cinema when you concentrate on the film...

if you've not seen them for a while, you'll probably find that you don't actually want to do anything. you'll probably just want to sit and be with them talking and stuff. i hope it goes okay either way.

    Really?!

But then I think Lucifer might be right, do I really want to spend my precious time with them running round organising a BBQ?

Think I might go with RB's idea.

Yeah, as it was said bring in take-away which I am sure they'll appericiate and maybe just have a movie rented on hold.
Now, I haven't been able to gather the whole picture of what the situation is, but maybe looking through old photoalbums with them would be entertaining? Or just stingy perhaps?

a huge hug when they arrive.
    with a huge smile ...
movies are a bad idea ...thats the boring shit they live with everyday.
bit like asking them to watch corra with you.
    bit like ignoring them.

a country walk with loads of goodies to eat?
with a visit to a cafe for coffee?
that way ...the three of you ...have no option but to talk laugh cry ...be with each other.

I know this is pretty pointless, but I just want to say good luck!!!!!!!!!!!! :) I can only imagine how nerve wracking it must be!

12 and 14 year olds are awkward ages... you know they'll probably be pleased as long as there's nice food (takeaways are good) and it's not too intense. On the one hand I don't know how well an interrogation session will go down but on the other if you're on rocky ground with them you don't want to go in at the deep end. The telly is a good option I suppose... but it's unsociable I suppose. Do you have any hobbies? You could get them involved in them possibly?

i have had a couple of similar experiences.
my youngest son ...23 this year ...aged nine arrives back in my life seen very little of him for four years so ...i had him walking in the woods and then chopping logs back at the house.
walking in the woods and forrests ...cliff tops and beaches.
for a manchester jkid it was none stop.
only telly or digi game time was in the evening.
i was blessed with a completely different environment than what he knew and i used that where i could.
