I can't think of a single author, although I think James Herbert, Jeffery Deaver and John Grisham write splendid books.

Bad Seed - One of my fave books is 48 by James Herbert.

I also really like trashy crime writer )Michael Connelly, and I like a lot of Ben Elton's stuff, as well as Christopher Brookmyre (Not the End of the World being my favourite of his), Nick Hornby and Tolkien (not just LotR)

Also Rudyard Kipling, Jack London, Raymond Chandler, P.G.Wodehouse and Alan Bennett. In a similar vein to Hesse, the Classics of Chinese Philosophy and Jiddu Krishnamurti. And for some reason I'm haunted by Wuthering Heights- can't explain, suspect I identify with dark and doomed characters.

Terry Pratchett. I'd say Robert Rankin, but you can't judge an author by one book.

For me it was my likeness with Emil Sinclair that did it. I swear, it felt like reading a description of myself, when I read Demian aged 14 or 15.

Personally I like Carl Hiassen, but on the whole I'll read anything which takes my fancy and there are some authors I like but not always all their books...
