putting on weight.

anyone got any tips?

after the great tooth saga/operation/recovery of the summer, i lost about 3/4 of a stone, which is more than i had to lose, and parts of me look awful. i have hollows in my cheeks and temples, and you can see my ribs when i wear low cut tops. :yuck:

anyway, the doctors are a bit mental about my weight anyway, and are either convinced i'm starving myself, or are totally un-sympathetic. they've said just to eat more (thanks for that, dr. obvious) but i have been eating to the point where i feel sick after every meal cause i'm so full, and snacking most of the day, and i've still only gained about a pound since august. i don't want to stuff myself with junk food all day, in case i do a supersize me, and my liver dies.

help!

The reason I ask is because malabsoprtion could be a cause of weight loss or failure to gain weight.

Is it that you feel full quickly or genuinely eat a lot but don't put on weight?

i eat small meals, usually, but i have about 6 a day. if i try and eat three big meals i feel too ill after the last to eat the next.

and then i snack loads in between the meals too, so i'd say i eat a lot.

Why do you think you aren't gaining weight?

i've always been small-framed, and been able to eat anything i want and stay the same weight, which is great when you're a healthy size, but a pain in the arse when you're trying to fatten up.

    It's a mystery.

Eating more calories than you use is the only way to gain weight.

Regular exercise will help you stay healthy and increase your appetite.

Add calories to your diet really easily. Always carrying a bag of sweets should add 350+ calories a day.
Full fat milk in tea and on cereal. Jelly adds loads of calories if you buy the sugared version. Milkshakes and smoothies are good too.
    Basically, eat more, move less.

You can try dietary supplements like Ensure. You can get them from Boots. This may be of interest too.

that's not exactly the best way to go about things really. ok, so i don't have the answer but eating more and moving less will just make her unfit.

you could try upping the carbs, or mking sure you eat plenty of carbs with plenty of protein through the day. could try as alternatives meal drinks, protein shakes...
the key would be making sure calories in are more than calories burnt

it might be worth visiting a nutritionalist.

I was going to suggest this. Make sure you still eat healthy, balanced meals though - I don't like the whole 'eat more, move less' suggestion. You want to put on weight, not turn into an unfit lazy cow! Adding slim-fast shakes or weight-gain shakes to your diet will give you extra calories without compromising your health I should think. Not an expert though.

I'm quite interested in any ideas on this myself, actually. My boyfriend has been told he's clinically underweight and yet he eats loads, is hungry all the time it seems and eats huge portions. I suggested the slim-fast thing to him too and he seems to be fairly interested but hasn't taken it up yet.

PS... foundthis site which is one of the only weight-gain sites I can find which isn't just aimed at body building guys! It's good as it suggests calorie-rich foods which aren't just covered in grease and fat.

This is a familiar problem. For several years, I have been under-weight. No matter what I ate, I simply couldn't gain a pound. My weight went up when I started on Roaccutane, went down when I finished, and went up again when I started anti-depressants. So, I can say that drugs are not the answer.

Can also depend on your age and metabolic rate on whether or not you lose weight or put weight on easily. I have to eat a phenominal amount if i want to put on weight. It's alot easier for me to lose it than put it on...

A workmate has a similar problem. He just did a little more excercise to gain a bit of muscle, weight, and bulk, and scoffs loads of chocs and crisps. Not the healthiest of food, but he has put on weight at last.

This is the problem with wanting to put weight ON - the easiest way is by eating unhealthily. Just because it doesn't make you put on weight it doeasn't mean that it's not doing your insides any good. Perhaps a nutritionist could help you work out a healthy plan that would also help you put on some weight? I know, they're expensive, but maybe your GP would refer you - it would also help you prove to them how much you want to be putting on some weight...

Here's some info from our feature on dieticians:

If you get a referral from your GP, the dietician they send you to will be state registered, and thus suitably trained. However if you clash with the first person they send you to, and feel they don't relate to your way of life or your specialist diet you may want to look for another. Your GP may be able to help with this, or you can search for one yourself. For a state registered dietitian, send an sae marked 'private practice' to : The British Dietetic Association, 5th Floor Charles House, 148-149 Great Charles Street, Birmingham, B3 3HT.

    :)

In my workmates case, he doesn't put it on, or loose, weight by just eating normally. So eating the high calorie, high fat, food is just a way of him gaining weight until he gets to the weight he should be at. Hopefully he'll stay at that weight when he stops eating so much junk food.

i would definitely say exercise... and although you want to gain weight.. i would still be healthy about it....

i think you could also up the carb intake...

and i think i read in a magazine somewhere that even half a cup of peanuts does something..

i don't really remember... i'll look for the article...

I'd suggest drinking lots of fizzy drinks!!!

I reckon inthe summer I gained 7 lbs just from the hot weather and drinking extra pepsi, Coke, etc which are loaded with sugar!!
