Is Harold Taking the Piss?

I install my firewall and in the first 5 minutes there's like "127 intrusions have been blocked, 60 have been high-rated". There was a time when it was rare for me to get any. What is the cause of this darn besmirchment?

The 'cause is you being a nub, leaving ports open everywhere and downloading .exe's all the 14 year old girls on your MSN list send you in their shitty chain emails ;<

    Nope. Can't be it.

A lot of them are "false positives" in an attempt to justify the firewall's role further.

No, really. You've probably got so many ports open it's a wonder your RAM isn't physically leaking through them.

How do I know which ports are alright for me to close and then close them?

We all had to learn somewhere..

Take a look at your firewalls logs and most of it will be junk traffic but your firewall will stop it any way. When I used to just use a software firewall as my main source of protection, I used to get hundreds and hundreds of "hack attempts" every day. Most is just background noise.

Take a port scan and see if you need to close any open ports that shouldn't be open. Choose "all service ports".

None open or closed, all green for stealth. Thanks Felix.
