RIP
News story
RIP.
there will be a massive hole in radio, not to mention the lives of his family and friends
It was so great, i remember (for example) on Fireworks night he was reaching around for 'an old happy hardcore tune' (which was fireworks by Force & Styles)! i mean can you believe that, it was things like that. You could tune in and be introduced to so many different styles of music; there was and never will be again a DJ that can pull off the diverse and educational shows that meant so much to so many people.
No one could put The Smiths, or Pulp, or the Jesus and Mary Chain right next to High Contrast, CLSM, Sharkey, MC Det?!
One of my favorite CDs in the world is the (Fabric:Live: John Peel Session), its just got everything. Grab one before they disappear, its such a fantastic set.
RIP
1) posthumous knighthood
2) the second stage @ Glastonbury named after him
really funny quote from someone emailing R1
'If god is a DJ, he's unemployed now; RIP John Peel'
tune to radio1 tonight for some of the best music you're likely to hear on the radio in ages.
I think everybody liekd him because he played good music across the board - good music you often wouldn't hear anywhere else.
Rest In Peace.
Rest in Peace John
RIP John Peel
Here Here .....
To say that he'll be a great loss to the world of music would be an understatement ..... He continually managed to surprise me every time I listened to his show ... in fact his was the only show I ever made a point of listening too regularly ....
He broadened the horizons of many and introduced them to genres that they would normally have scoffed at ....
John you will be missed .... Rest In Peace

the best thing you could do is find out  thats the whole point.
Listen to R1 over the next few evenings, he was a large part of why we know about;
*The Smiths
*Joy Division/New Order
*Sex Pistols
*The Clash
*David Bowie (he sent some of his own money to Bowie in the 1960's to get his earliest demos recorded
*Nirvana
*Mudhoney
*Babes In Toyland
*The White Stripes
*The Datsuns
*He was the first DJ in the world to play The Beatles 'I am The Walrus'
*Happy Mondays
*He was the only DJ on the Radio to play Hard Dance and Hardcore.
*He helped break alot of Drum N Bass
*Played wonderfully obscure records that we otherwise would never have heard.
*He is THE reason we have The Undertones and why 'Teenage Kicks' was a hit.
I could ramble on for ages mate, just check out a few shows or something if you're interested.;)
I found out 15 minutes before they announced it officially and I was just desparate to share my sorrow with someone but wasn't allowed to say anything!
The new bands stage is a new tent rather than a tent for new bands but the eclectic mix of bands they have on the stage means it's a perfect choice for re-naming.
