Yup. Shepherds Pie is made with sliced lamb. Cottage Pie is made with minced beef.

i thort shepards pie was mutton but thats prob what my mum used to tell me cos i used to refuse to eat lamb cos it was a baby

Shepherds Pie used to be mutton, because mutton is much cheaper than lamb, but mutton is hard to get hold of now so lamb is used instead.

    Mutton is just old sheep.

I knew that...I used to get it mixed up a lot. But not anymore :D

Amazing isn't it. It goes from a cheap meal that anyone can make with the master's sunday leftovers to a bollocking luxury item requiring one of the most expensive meats going.

That makes two of us, I always thought the veggies were the difference between the two...not the types of mince. Shows how much I know :p

It's well nice. You American's need some real food ;).

Good. Now anyone wanna tell my mum that. She says, we got Cottage Pie tonight. I think Yum. Time I tuck in, I've realised that it's beef not lamb. I don't even like beef that much. I'll say, this is Shepherds Pie and then she'll will say, it's all the same. :[]. Nnnnno. It's not mother.

I dunno how people get mixed up between the two foods. What does a sheperd do? Herd sheep. What does a cottage do? I dunno.

I knew it was the mince that was from a different animal. Not sure what shepards and cottages have to do with it though

Technically the difference in the meat would be the difference between shepherd's pie and cottage pie, but I don't know anyone who actually uses lamb to make it. What people call it seems to depend on what it was being called when they were a kid at home. So in my house it was made with minced beef but we called it shepherd's pie. I wouldn't ever call it cottage pie, cause it's not a name I heard as a kid. If you see what I mean.
