PC network/LAN gaming problem

Hi,

me and a friend wanted to play some multiplayer games recently.
the problem is just that even though we find each other's computers and can share files and stuff the games behave highly random.
Sometimes we find out game sessions, sometimes not.

Now to our computers:
Mine:

P4 2,4Ghz
512MB RAM
Onboard Intel 10/100 Network adapter
nVidia geForce 4 ti 4600 graphics card
Terratec DMX6Fire soundcard
Windows XP Pro (w/ SP 2)

His:

P4 3,0Ghz
512MB RAM
nVidia Geforce FX something...
Windows XP Home (w/ SP 2)

Games we've tried so far and how they responded:

Black Hawk Down - latest update installed: worked sometimes, even though I wouldn't find his session, but he could join my game. sometimes he got "punted" (kicked) though for no reason.

Rome Total War: we found each other's sessions ONCE but couldn't connect (message: "Unable to connect to host"). since then we never found each other again but he sees himself when he starts a game and I don't

StarCraft - latest update installed: we find each other but can't concect ("Unable to join game").

Arena Wars Demo: worked perfectly fine even though he couldn't find my session (but I could find his when was host).

Medal Of Honor w/ Spearhead and latest update: worked perfectly fine even though I couldn't find his session (so I had to host)

Star Trek Elite Force 2 - latest update installed: same as medal of honor

so this is really weird... things we tried in all kinds of combinations:

- turning the Windows XP Firewall off and on
- switching the network cable
- installing new network adapter drivers
- restarting the computers
- changeing some network properties

oh yeah, and of course we unblocked the games from the connection firewall and installed all the nessecary network protocols (IPX, TCP/IP, QoS, etc.).

does anybody have similar problems and/or even a solution for this dilemma?

greetz & thanx in advance!
felix

you both have IPs in correct range right?

like his IP is 192.168.0.1 and yours is 192.168.0.2

do you have any other firewalls, sounds like the problem i had???

When you host a game, get your mate to connect to localhost or 127.0.0.1

What rage is your LANs IP on? 192.168.x.x?? Do you have a router?

oh, I didn't know about the IPs, but we don't use a router/hub or other firewalls (I have a network hub though if that's better?)

and in most games you just haven't got the option to directly connect to an IP adress (concerning the localhost)

and how do we set our network IPs to be in range?

    ??

    That won't work.

localhost would be his mate's computer.

His mate has to attach to FLX's computer IP, if FLX is hosting the game.

ah, but still there just is no option to directly connect to an IP.
the game lobby just searches for open game sessions but finds none :-(

Use the All Seeing Eye, go to TOOLS then click FIND LAN SERVERS once you have got a server setup. By the way, one of you are hosting a game aren't you? You can also press the HOST button and it will setup the server on a host machine.

awesome! we tried it today with our IPs in range and it worked for almost all games!!!
we sometimes got the "Unable to join host" error but I guess that's the game's fault then.

so thanks a lot for the advice!!! :)
