Heya,
Don't really know why am writing this here, need to get it off my chest I guess and hoping to find people in "the same boat"!
I've been so excited lately bout going to uni in manchester 'cuz I thought it'd be great to meet new people and finally be able to properly start my independence. I was excited about leaving my parents (we live in Portugal), 'cuz they've always been quite overprotective, I spose with me being an only child, but now I think am reeaaaalllly gonna miss 'em and dunno if I'll cope. Never lived away from them for more than 2 weeks! And it's not like a can hop in a plane and go see them whenever!
I don't have any family in England, got a few friends spread around, but only family friends near Manchester, and I know this person who was in the same situation as me and 'till now ( a year later) he's still trying to recover from a depression.
Am scared I won't be able to make *good* friends that'll help me get over the homesickness and will just end up lonely there! Lol am not a crybaby tho I may sound it at this moment am just afraid things will take a nasty turn.
Also some "friend", when I told him I was going to Manchester, responded with "WHat? You trying to get raped or something?" which leaved me even more unsure and stressed!
Hmm..ok well thanks for reading (dunno if this should go in Relationship forum?) But I am just being paranoid right...

Manchester is a reasonably safe city, although I wouldn't want to walk around by myself late at night. Which can be said about most major cities.
So you'll be able to confined in most as they'll probably all feeling the same.
Just go out & get pissed & have a good time that'll put you being homesick to the back of your mind:)
My advice - learn to cook, even if its only a few things, its important!
Learn to manage money, set yourself a weekly budget.
Socialise - even if you have to force it, go out, talk to people, talk to people on your course etc. I dont like doing it myself, but when its called for then you have to.
Fanx for the replies:)
I guess we all go through it, wondering what the hell our parents will do without us there.
It seems weird to think that they have other things in their lives.
Lol k, got the point, didn't look at it from that perspective!
Also I can't imagine that there won't be a society for foreign students and thinks of other interests to you. + It's a good conversation starter to be from another country, as people would ask you about it.
Good luck!
Aslong as you make a effort with people, people will make a effort with you. I moved to manchester for uni on the 1st sept and its been 2 weeks now and am totally loving it.
I myself suffered from homesickness but people in my flat have been so caring and supportive. One of my flatmates developed into my girlfriend in 2 weeks. I was soo nervous that i was going to suffer from my homesickenss and not meet anyone but already i am far too busy to even think about it.... and uni hasnt even started properly.
So smile, keep busy and you'll be fine...... and enjoy yourself!
