Going away from home part of the uni experience?

Once again i call upon thesite to settle a discussion of mine.
Over a few drinks me and my best mate were discussing the university experience.
He's going to the nearby Uni of east anglia while i'm travelling away to Manchester.
I tried to convince him that the whole part of uni is to get away from home for a bit and to meet new people and is just a new experience...... he doesnt see this?

Am i in the minority who would up-sticks when theres a perfectly good uni nearby?
I guess he kinda made me think twice about what i am doing, which doesnt help when i am nervous as it is?

So is uni all about getting out in the big ol' world and leaving everything or is it better to stay safe in a place you know well?

One part of university is moving away and becoming more independent, but it isn't a crucial aspect. You can still have a wonderful time at university living at home, and a lot of people wouldn't enjoy beibng away from home because of homsesickness issues.

You're both right in a way, it is part of YOUR university experience, but it is not an experience everyone would want or enjoy. It isn't something that's crucial.

But as this is to settle an argument, no, you are wrong.

Well, I believe living independantly adds to the fun. Living at home would seem more-or-less like college ?

I would say its one of the key parts of going to uni.

I chose what uni to go to based purely on its location, I frankly couldnt really give a toss about the course I did. I wanted to be in London and I really enjoyed it.

To me moving somewhere else is one of the most important things. I mean, I'm moving to a different country!:p
If I stayed where I am now I would probably end up not leaving here afterwards, (and imagine if it was to be living with the parents...) Uni is definately a good place to start your full independence and to start relying more on yourself and your decisions rather than on others. Mmmm..moving away, definately essential to me!

Yes, I believe it's part of the experience. Hence why I'm not commuting the 30 odd minute drive every day and am living in a house.

I'm staying at home because it's the best option for me since I'm tucked away in my own double attic away from the parentals, I can't bear the thought of being away from the dog's and my chinchilla annnnnnnd I'd much rather spend my student loan on shoes and things. Oh and I've got M.E. so being too far away from my big comfy bed isn't a good idea.

Uni for most people is only about 40% about getting a degree - it's 60% the experience of becoming independent.

What better way to do it? Low cost housing, everyone in the same situation, good financial scenario for most people (loans + parents still helping cos you're in full time education). You get to see new parts of the country and meet people from all over the place all whilst getting a good education and gaining independence.

Moving away is, in my opinion, vital.

    Ye kinda agree here,
Its that sense of freedom and indepedance where you have take charge of your own life that does it. And the prospect of parties, drink women top sports facilities and socialising with peers in the same boat as yourself!

Seconded. I wanted to move North (lived in Derby at the time). Manchester was a fucking excellent choice.
