Subjects - Help

Ok. Firstly, sorry for posting.

I need help, next year I’m going to collage now I’m doing a B-tec national in ict now I always thought this is what I wanted and I suppose I do but after that I’m being pressured into doing ict in uni, now I would want to but I’d prefer to do history/Archaeology and psychology now My family are forcing/pushing me to do what I’m good at which is ict and not what I enjoy history/Archaeology and psychology ok I do enjoy ict I’m good at it and I like working on pc’s but I’m more interested in history/Archaeology and psychology.

The one problem is, is that my brother is gaining off of me, he regrets not going to uni and it seems like he’s gaining success or living what he regrets off of me

Help please I’m losing my mind I’m confused.

    Right, I'll say it again just for the record.

    I still think A Levels are your best option because you get a range of subjects, so you can easily do history (or archaeology if it's offered, but I'd say history's a better choice as an A Level because it's less specific) with psychology and ICT as a compromise. (Incidentally, to do psychology at uni you'll need another science, I thnk - check some unis).

    You then have a year to think about uni, and maybe your family will come round to your way of thinking.

    Phone the college you're supposed to be attending in September and see what they advise. You'll probably be able to change to A Levels easily enough with what you've told me about your predicted GCSE grades.

    Either way, I do believe you have a choice. They actually can't force you to do what you don't want to do.

    what, you want to study those as as/a-levels? you'll need quite good gcse grades to study them i should think. don't be pressurised into doing something you don't want to, do what you want to do.

    ...that text in bold really confused me. :p

    When I applied you didn't have to have science to do psychology unless you were applying to Oxbridge (which is experimental psychology and slightly different - you basically do a natural sciences degree for the first and second year).

    At the moment there is still a choice between a BSc or a BA in psychology at most universities - the courses are pretty much identical, but in the third year you specialise in either biological (BSc) or social (BA) aspects. Now many universities are scrapping the BA (as the British Psychological Society wants psychology to be seen as a true science) and so only the BSc course will remain.

    As far I'm aware, you don't need science subjects at A-level to get on to the BSc (you certainly didn't at Nottingham last year), but you'll need at least a pass (better universities will want a B or above) in biology/double science/single science at GCSE. Very few universities want psychology at A-level (I applied to Nottingham, Newcastle, Lancaster, Leicester, Leeds and Reading and none of them asked for psychology - most said they preferred us not to take it) but most want a pass at maths GCSE (again, the better unis want at least a B).

    What I'm trying to say is, if you want to take psychology at uni, you're better off doing biology at A-level than psychology.

    It may help to think ahead and find out entry requirements for your chosen subject from a selection of universities.
    I did mean to say, actually, that for the archaeology courses I looked at, which are all BAs, they didn't ask for anything specific at A Level. As Aspartame says, though, there are requirements if you want to do one of the BSc courses like bioarch, geoarch or anything like that.

    Well thanks for the Advice guys.. It's just that they're pressuring me into doing stuff I'm good at and not want I love.. I love psychology and History.. Well mainly military history and stratagy but they don't seem to care about what I want :(

    ignore them, it's your education not theirs.

    having said that, they're probably just looking out for your best interests.

    I see were your coming from with they're just looking out for me but yet why would they want me to spend the rest of my life doing something thats easy.. unchallenging and will bore me and my life instead of doing something.. fun... exciting and something inwhich i have pasion for.. Something which would motivate me..

    The thing is I feel I have no control.. I tried to speak to my older brother about this and he said it was some FAD and I'll get bored of it within a few years.. what if he's wrong.. what if I miss out on something I love... or want to do.. I find it difficualt... betray what my family want.. and do what I want to do... Or do what they want... and.. betray myself..

    well it is your life! you're old enough to decide what you want to do. it's your life, take control for goodness sake.

    If you ahve ideas as to what you want to do at university, should you get there, then I would highly recommend reading through the UCAS Directory to see what you need to get ontop thsoe courses.

    There's nothing like planning ahead.

    Ok thanks kermit.. any idea where i can get hold of a copy of a UCAS Directory or is there an online version..

    Many thanks people :) just hard trying to take control of my life when others feel it's there life to do with it as they see fit.
