Mayor of London Elections

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Just wondered what your opinion of The Mayor of London is. I think Londoners get to vote for this on June 10th as well right?

I quite like what Red Ken has done in his time as Mayor. He seems to have done quite a lot seeing as he doesn't actually have that much power over things.

What are the actual powers of the Mayor of London?

My only problem with Ken is that he has rejoined Labour. A lot of people who voted for him as an independent aren't going to vote for him now. I understand that he probably sees Labour as 'his' party (at the end of the day he was there when Tony was still chasing Cherie down the Uni campus) but the fact is that for as long as that despicable man remains the leader of the party many people will stay away from Labour.

Having said that, the Mayor of London has nothing to do with national or foreign policy, and Ken has done a fantastic job in my opinion, so I will be voting for him. God save us all if Shagger Norris gets in.

I won't be voting for Labour on the assembly though.

I think the congestion charging is a good idea, especially.

maybe. I don't think it should be extended though other it will just be seen as another way to milk drivers.
And it's not as if our appalling train services aren't overcrowded already.

Well even though I work in Chelsea, one of the areas earmarked for the extension of the CC, I think it's a good idea. The bottom line is that people should not bring their cars into Central London for commuting.

I don't think it will accept our business and others around us either. Most people who purchase from us usually walks out of the shop a few thousand Pounds poorer. If they were coming by car I very much doubt an extra fiver would deter them...

Luke, as usual your standard 'right wing' microchip is doing the talking for you and delivering the default answers one could expect. Would you care for once to do some independent thinking and tell us in your own words why Ken Livingstone is such an idiot?

He should know when to shut it, might have lost London a few US tourists there.

Oh money money money... always come to that doesn't it...

From my experience with US tourists (and I do business with them pretty much every day) die-hard neo-cons and Bushbots are not terribly likely to own passports, let alone come to London.

And I think most people would happily absorb the 50 pence per head (at the very most) London might have lost as a result of a few hundred nutcases cancelling their trips in protest, for the privilege of making it clear that the murdering war criminal scumbag is not welcome in our city.

I think the congestion charging is good. I live in the congestion charging zone so it means that if people drive to see me they will come in the evening or weekend when the charges don't apply. It justs makes people be more considerate about the roads they are clogging up and makes using public transport more appealing.

And the posters that Ken put up all over the underground (ok so I doubt he personally put them up but they've got his name on) are good too. They say things like don't put your feet on the seats and don't play your music too loudly. Cos let's face it the other people who you meet on the tube are often the most off putting thing about it!

I'll be voting for Ken. I don't know anything about the other candidates but if it isn't broken why fix it?

Not sure what you mean there, but if you're referring to 'bad' areas, firstly they're no worse or better than in any other town and city, and secondly it's hardly the fault of Ken Livingstone is it?
and anyway i don't like that livingston, he is a liberal like you lot so you would love him.
Gotta love Luke's kitchen table politics innit?

Even the S*n is capable of a more in-depth analysis mate. Care to explain why Livingstone is "a liberal" (is he?), why is that a bad thing and why you wouldn't like him to win the mayoral election?
