I applied for a summer placement working for the British Geological Survey sampling soils and rivers, and out of 200 people I am one of the chosen 20. 
Boring grunt work I know, but the first step on y chosen career ladder, plus I get to go live in N. Ireland for part of summer (always wanted to go) and make some money.

I didnt think I'd get it because I'm only a first year and dont have much previous experience, but applied in a "you'll regret it if you dont" kind of way. SO there you go. Never know what'll happen if you try.
