network speed equation

Anyone remember the equation to work out network speeds?

Trying to work out how long it would take for a 1Mb file to go down certain network speeds and it's too early in the day and too late in the week for me to care/remember/think.

    I don't remember but: 1megabyte = 1008 kilobytes. 1 kilobyte = 8 kilobits.

so if you transfer at 56 kilobits per second, that's erm

    56/8 = 7 (kilobytes per second)
    1008/7 = 144 seconds. That's 2 minutes, 24 seconds isn't it?

I think that's how it works anyway. For increased speaks you just fiddle it a bit.

    to estimate it errrr

    8bits is a byte
so its the file size KB divided by (connection speed in Kb/s divided by 8)

so its the file size * 8 then all that divided by connection speed and that gives you the least time it can take
