career help desparately needed!!!

hey!

i really really need help. i am in my second year at college and have been just told that i cant do the uni course i wanted to do.
every since i was 3 years old ive wanted to be a vet, i did 3 years experiance at a vets, but stopped due to my GCSE's. i then discovered about a week later that i have a severe allergy to cat and dog fur (which explains the runny nose, streaming eyes and red, itchy face when i was working there).

and so, after getting over this, i decided that id like to work in an area that makes a difference for animals (preferably wild ones), but does not involve constant direct contact with them. thus i applied through UCAS to do a course in animal behaviour and welfare. it doesnt involve handling cats+dogs, more rabbits, sheep, goats, chickens, and a few exotic animals like lemurs.
The idea of this course has grown alot on me over the last few months+ive been working extra hard to obtain the grades i need to get in. ive been accepted+have confirmed my choices.

Recently though, ive been having allergy syptoms all over again - including bad eczema on my face+neck (i recently made a post about this in the health forum). and today, after a trip to a specialist at a hospital, i discussed this with them+they said i really shouldn't go into a career like this. something to do with the fact that i am extremely likely to develop allergies to species of animals ive not previously been in contact with, but anyway im gutted :(

i dont know what to do now! im thinking of cancelling my UCAS application+taking a year out to decide upon a new route+hopefully getting myself some experiance.

my perfect career is one where i work with the conservation of rare animals, in this country or abroad, but not very furry ones. maybe reptiles???

im sorry for rambling on, but what i want to know is:
* does anybody on here know how i could gain more experiance in the areas of reptiles, spiders, etc, or with rare endangered species.
* can anybody give me any tips, or websites that i can use to arrange some work experiance.
* is it possible, going through a place like connections, to find a job that id like, but where i could work my way up to the level i want to be at, without going to university??

any help advice or comments are very welcome, as i need to sort this soon. Thank u in advance+sorry its so long, just had to rant+get things off my chest.

Cheers :thumb: :)

BTW, i am going to discuss this with my tutor at college tomo first thing+arrange a careers interview!

Well I don't know anything specifically to do the animal stuff but I just wanted to say that I think your idea of taking a year out is a really good one. That way you can think things though calmly, get some good experience behind you and won't be rushing onto a course that you're not 100% sure about.

What about your local zoo, I'm sure if you explained your interest and problem, they could arrange some work experience. Or there's always the option of working for a charity (i.e WWF) in a fundraising or educational capacity.

i'm sure there are lots of office jobs for animal protection charities. that way you could make a difference without ever having to be near them.

Im doing a BSc in animal behavioural science. Im almost finished my first year and we havent even seen any of the animals so on the allergy aspect, its not a hands on course its science. Maybe that would suit you? I know people on a welfare course and they do have contact with the animals but not much.
A course which is good on a helping kinda thing is conservation biology.
