Do you think it's worth paying more to have the net in your room? A couple of my mates with laptops reckon it is, but surely there's no need if you can be bothered to get off your backside and go to a uni computer room?

i pay £12 a month here(loughborough) for unmetered network access, we get anywhere upto 1000kbps downloads, so its very worth it

I paid £60 for the year. I think its better as the computer rooms close quite early at my uni and they tend to be busy at exam time when everyones trying to type up essays etc. It really depends on how much you're going to use your computer and what times the computers are available to use.

I would get tinternet in my room if I could, but then I think I would spend even more time on here, definitely not a good thing!

The 24hr computer room I'm in now is pretty much always empty at night, and you can usually find a computer during the day, although it is a pain when assignments are due in and everyone suddenly appears. I reckon it depends on your situation, but personally, yes, I would pay extra.

I have the net but I don't pay extra I don't think. Its very useful, especially as the uni has a system where all the lectures and things are put on a server and we can just download them. I'd go for it.

I found it fairly essential, mainly because the labs were always so full.

yeah - get it. I pay £40 a year for broadband, it's def worth it as v fast has no filters on it and the uni computer rooms are like always full.

i had it in my room at halls and now in my room at my house.

i'm more of a night person so having access to the net then is very useful. also the computer clusters at uni are always full but saying that i've never queued more than 15minutes to get to a computer.

i would say its a good investment though.

    well, indeed

but sometimes computer rooms are full or things are broken or you just dont want to leave your room because it is pouring with rain

or...in some computer rooms you are not allowed to go on sites like this, for example

i would pay the money personally :)

Well thanks folks, seems like everone is in agreement! The next question then, is where do I get a decent cheap laptop! No point getting a brand new one, I could get a re-conditioned one. Where's the best place to look? Go on, someone say a computer shop.... :-) I don't know what ebay is like for that sort of thing.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
you can usually get laptops at discount through most uni's
not sure about refurbished ones though
how much do you plan on spending?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I got my laptop on ebay :) £230, then i bought a bigger HD and got Alistair to fit it for me. Simple as. Works fine on my uni network, and does everything that i want it to.

I know I'm havin the net in my room when i go university in september

i wish i got the choice :( no net for me

i definitely like having the net in my room, its just so easy to access, but, be warned it can be a major distraction when you want to do work if you're anything like me

indeed, procrastination is a huge problem. you think i'll just check messageboards for a bit. or just chat on msn for a bit. etc.

I dislike even the idea of doing late night essays in the labs. I have what I need in my room, including the essential space to spread out my notes and whatnot. It gives me something to waste time on, and anyway, I'm an internet addict, I'd be screwed without 24/7 access.

we have about eleven computer rooms with around 30 computers in each, so i just use the uni ones

only problem is you cant do what you'd do on the internet at home, i.e. scratch your bollocks and watch porn :)

Sheffield uni in some halls only. its £100 for the year, expensive but worth it! the love of not dialing up!!1
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Cool, is it included in the rent price? I spoke to someone else who said they got booted off for using it too much, isn't it unlimited?!

£100 a year can't be bad, is it mega speed? I'm going to get it I think....

Exeter is £50 a year unrestricted usage except you can't download anything because they have really good firewalls set up. While this is annoying, whats even more annoying is I bought a webcam so my parents could see me and that won't even work :(

It's worth it, the Internet is an eternal source of amusement and there will be days when you're bored out of your mind. You'll have to check your email lots regarding your academic work anyway and unless you live right next to a computer cluster, that can be a real pain. Get a printer too, best £70 I ever spent.

I pay AU$150 a year for internet access in my room. Its definately worth it, as i have a nearly new computer, which is faster and better than the computers in the labs, which piss me off. Its also good to have access 24 hours a day without having to go anywhere, as i have to use email and the web a lot for my classes. Its damn fast, too. :)

As for watching pr0n, well i can't access it at home, either, so ah well. :P

in the 4 years i have been a student i have never found it a problem. i have a computer in my room for essays and stuff but not internet access. i would just sit aimlessly for hours, doing nothing constructive and not get my essays etc done. im not self disciplined enough.

Hmm according to the book they sent me all the halls have it, and most of the flats, so I guess maybe they've invested some more money in it since last year when you were applying. I still haven't sent it back yet, I dunno which flats to go for, Taptonville, Endcliffe, Riverdale, Wolfson.... they all have the net. Think I'll go Taptonville simply because they're nearest the law dept. even though you don't like the people who live there :) I'll start a mass uprising, resulting in a revolution overthrowing the old guard and turning Taptonville into the place to be! The future is safe in my hands.

Its just a general thign that we dont mix with them, dont really know why but apparently its always the same. Not sure if the flat have net (as you say i dont like them) but i know sorby hall doesnt have net or phones nor do half of tapton etc. so the book aint right. Espec as i spoke to the workman who said only the doors are being changed this summer!

If you dont send it back soon, youll end up with nowt, you do know they work on a first come, first serve basis dont you? most people send back by feb/mar! You'll only be there a year anyway just grab your chances and pick.

BUT THEN AGAIN I HAVE A HOUSE!

I'm amazed so many people have to pay for the net in halls.

We get a completely free 1.5mb/s connection here (or 10mb/s across the network). Loads of first years get free laptops too.

Even paying for it would be well worth it. Saves you going to the library when you need to do something.

    :D

They only sent them out mid march, but besides I should be ok with an unconditional cos you can get allocated before everyone else, which is a bit jammy....

I definately couldn't live without the net in my room. My computer is where I do my work adn so much of the time I use the interenet to look up things that could be of assistance to me. Plus a lot of the software I need to do my work is downloadable. Only cost me £50 for the year though so it wasn't too bad.

I hate the uni computers. Cant' work where I don't have music and my own space. Just feel cramped and like I can't relax at uni. Oh adn not being able to eat or drink in them is hell.

Im at sheffield hallam and i dont think any halls we have have broadband in. £100 a year for broadband is nice when you consider the 10 quid line rental and around 14 quid on an isp every month just for dail up.

Its well worth having the net in your room to check stuff like timetable changes and when assignments have to be in. Its saved me from getting out of bed just to check a timetable at uni quite a few times.
