Yesterday I had... apple, parsnips, broccoli, apple juice.

    4. Not too bad, i suppose.

None yet today, but the food i have on my desk to be eaten includes 4 portions, so i suspect i'll manage it!

I have been doing so well lately!

Yest I had a banana, OJ, onions, tomatoes, sweetcorn, chillis (do they count?).

So far today I have had OJ, banana, beetroot, cranberries and when I get to my gran's I will have stew with lots of veg in it. Feel really pleased about myself!

All i ate yesterday was a KFC. So two if we're counting baked beans and lettuce in my burger. None if we're going to be sensible about it!

None yet today. I've not been hungry, so i've only had boiled eggs and biscuits so far.

where do you get the 5th from?

it also depends how much onion you had and how much salad.

Like I said, 4/5. I have lots of onion on everything, haha.

I had a rather large portion of salad :yum:

You should look on the back of packets. You would probably be surprised at the amount you actually need to constitute one portion.

but fruit and veg don't come in packets! so, does onion count then?

ETA: doh! yes they do, stoopid! but i steal my onions from my mum's, and she gets them from auction so no packaging there.

Ive also heard that it doesn't matter how much you have of something, it can still only count for 1 of your 5 a day...

well that makes sense really. you need to eat the different things to get the different good stuff from them. if you just ate 5 bananas a day you'd only be getting 5 x banana goodness.

Well that sounds stupid. Then surely only the right combination of 5 fruit and veg a day means you get everything you need?

it's not a case of 'getting everything you need', but having variation.

I normally have 5+ portions of fruit and veg a day.
Today so far I have had a banana, two apples, fresh orange juice, a salad for lunch and then tonight I am having a stir fry and probably 2 more pieces of fruit.

As i understood it - you can count starch foods such as potatoes as part of your 5 a day but they can only constitute 1 portion. Similarly with fruit juice and I think dried fruits/ and pulses.

    I hate baked beans.

    Anyway i've eaten today -

OJ for breakfast, plus cereal with dried fruit in it plus yoghut and blackberries on top - i'm hoping that counts for about 1.5?

Then an apple, plus home made potato and parsnip soup with ginger and honey - so that must be another two.

3.5/5 - is OK seeing as i've still got tea to go.

Anyway as someone else said you do have to eat wayyy more than you think to get one portion of your veg in - think it needs to be roughly around the size of a tennis ball.

The '1' portion size depends on the veg/fruit you are eating.

Plus potatos etc don't count -
