Represent UK youth at the UN

Do you have what it takes to be the UK’s youth delegate to the United Nations? The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, in partnership with the United Nations Association of the UK, is looking for a youth delegate to attend the UN Commission for Social Development in New York from 7th – 16th February 2007.

The Commission’s focus is on ‘promoting full employment and decent work for all’. You will work on responses to the UN Secretary-General’s report on youth in the global economy and will attend the launch of the World Youth Report 2007 on behalf of the UK.

Before attending the Commission you will consult with UK youth organisations, and you will take part in a number of follow-up events on your return to the UK, to share your experiences with other young people. Your flights to and accommodation in New York will be covered by the FCO.

To be eligible, you must be a British citizen aged between 18 and 24 and must:

1. be mature, organised and reliable;
2. have excellent spoken and written English;
3. have a strong commitment to the UN’s youth advocacy work; and
4. be confident in expressing your viewpoint in small and large meetings.

To apply, please email a CV and covering letter (of no more than 2 sides of A4 each) by 5pm on Friday 17th November to Mark Rusling, UNA-UK Campaigns and Education Officer, at [email protected].

Please explain in your cover letter why youth should be represented at the meeting, why you should represent the UK at the Commission and provide examples of when you have shown the four above requirements. Please identify any previous experience you may have of the UN’s work. For more information, call Mark on 020 7766 3459. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed during the week commencing 27th November.
